  1. Warm Up • Using your notes and diagrams on prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells determine which organelles are present in which type of cell. Place a check mark only if the organelle is present in the cell.

  2. Lysogenic Cycle • Lysogenic Viruses insert their DNA into the Host cell and remains dormant for months or years before entering the Lytic Cycle to burst the cell.

  3. 2. Diseases Caused by Lysogenic Viruses

  4. a. Chicken Pox

  5. b. Shingles An acute infection caused by a ractivation of the varicella zoster virus, which also causes chicken pox. It usually occurs during adulthood after exposure to chicken pox in childhood. The chicken pox virus remains dormant in the body.

  6. c.Herpes Simplex Virus 1 & 2 STD HSV-2 usually produces only mild symptoms or signs or no symptoms at all. However, HSV-2 can cause recurrent painful genital sores in many adults, and HSV-2 infection can be severe in people with suppressed immune systems. Regardless of severity of symptoms, genital herpes frequently causes psychological distress in people who know they are infected.

  7. d. Human Papilloma Virus- AKA Warts Non-cancerous skin growths caused by a viral infection in the top layer of the skin. Viruses that cause them are called human papillomavirus (HPV). STD

  8. e. AIDS/HIV ___________ STD 3. The human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) is a retrovirus that destroys white blood cells and causes the disease known as AIDS (AutoImmune Deficiency Syndrome)

  9. Retroviruses HIV Virus that contains RNA, is lysogenic, and therefore mutates frequently so that vaccination is impossible.

  10. 3. How does HIV affect the immune system? • HIV attacks Helper T Cells which are white blood cells responsible for recognizing foreign pathogens and encouraging the production of antibodies.

  11. Where opportunistic infections and other conditions affect a person with HIV

  12. Live Action Role Play!!!!Lytic vs. Lysogenic Reproduction You will receive a card labeled with one of the following: Plasma Membrane Helper T Cell Killer T Cell Cell DNA Flu Antibody HIV Please wait and listen for instructions.
