  2. What is Head Start? Head start is a program of the United States Department of Health and Human Services that provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families.

  3. Events that led to Head Start • In 1964, the Federal Government asked a panel of child development experts to draw up a program to help communities overcome the handicaps of disadvantaged preschool children. The panel reports became “Project Head Start.”

  4. Influences on Early Childhood Education • Head start has played a major role in focusing the attention of the Nation on the importance of early childhood development. • The program has led in efforts to improve the cognitive abilities of young children. Studies have indicated that Head Start children score higher that comparable non-Head Start children in preschool achievement tests.
