The bill is expected to pass the National Assembly in February, according to parliamentary officials. This bill will become effective as of July 1, 2013. This means that from this day, Korean youngsters who reached 19 years of age can perform legal acts such as buying and selling real estate properties without consent from their parents. Lawmakers’ move is in line with the trend of lowering the adult age in other countries. It also reflects the changing Korean society with more adolescents becoming members of the society at an earlier age and growing more rapidly, officials said.
