  1. SURGICAL CARE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT The focus of this measure is to provide appropriate and timely antibiotic prophylaxis, cardiac care, and venous thromboembolism prophylaxis. Infection prevention is crucial! Document temperature management/use of forced air warming Administer appropriate antibiotics timely Make sure foley cath is removed by POD#2 Appropriate hair removal Assess and document needed VTE prophylaxis in timely manner Beta Blockers within perioperative period • The nurse can help with this by: • Check for beta blockers prior to admission and be sure is given in perioperative period • Complete assessments for VTE prophylaxis • Start antibiotics in appropriate time frame • Check with MD if antibiotics are not discontinued within 24 hours of procedure • Be sure foley catheter is removed by 2nd post op day or have MD document reason for NOT removing the catheter.
