  2. Lesson 10 True and False Equations

  3. STUDENT OUTCOME The student will understand that an equation is a statement of equality between two expressions. Homework: pg S.52 #’s 1-11, 14, 17, 23-28, 33-38

  4. BELLWORK 1. Consider the statement: “The President of the United States is a United States citizen.” Is the statement a grammatically correct sentence? What is the subject of the sentence? What is the verb in the sentence? Is the sentence true? 2. Consider the statement: “2 + 3 = 1 + 4” This is a sentence. What is the verb of the sentence? What is the subject of the sentence? Is the sentence true? 4. Consider the statement: “2 + 3 = 9 + 4” Is this statement a sentence? And if so, is the sentence true or false?

  5. Exercise 2 (S.47): A number sentence is a statement of equality between two numerical expressions. A number sentence is said to be true if both numerical expressions are equivalent (that is, both evaluate to the same number). It is said to be false otherwise. True and false are called truth values.

  6. Determine whether the following number sentences are TRUE or FALSE. f. Do letters g-n in your groups.

  7. Exercise 6 (S.50): An algebraic equation is a statement of equality between two expressions. Name a value of the variable that would make each equation a true number sentence. • Let x=_________. Then is true. • Let m=________. Then is true. • The average of 7 and n is -8 if ___________. d. A number X and its square, have the same value when x=____. e. Let a=__________. Then 2a = a + a is true. f. q + 67 = q + 68 is true for q=_____.

  8. EXIT TICKET 1. Consider the following equation, where represents a real number: Is this statement a number sentence? If so, is the sentence TRUE or FALSE? 2. Suppose we are told that b has the value 4 . Can we determine whether the equation is TRUE or FALSE? If so, say which it is; if not, state that it cannot be determined. Justify your answer. 3. For what value of is the following equation TRUE?
