  5. Six hormones serve as chemical messengers to your reproductive system. • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) • Luteinizing hormone (LH) • Estrogen • Progesterone • Testosterone

  7. Types of contraceptives • Oral Contraceptives- stops ovulation or by changing the condition in the uterus • Hormonal Methods –IUD, patch, injection • Barrier Contraceptives – spermicides, diaphragm, condom

  9. Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are transmitted by: • Sexual contact • Blood transfusion • Hypodermic needles

  10. Puberty

  11. Puberty is the process of physical changes by which a child's body matures into an adult body capable of sexual reproduction to enable fertilization. Puberty usually starts some time between age 8 and 13 in girls and 10 and 15 in guys.

  12. Physical Changes during puberty Girls ∙ Ovaries Enlarging ∙Breast Growth ∙ Pubic Hair ∙ First Menstrual Period ∙Grow Considerable Height and Weight Boys ∼ Rapid Growth ∼ Testicles and Scrotum to enlarge ∼ Penis starts to grow ∼ Pubic hair ∼ Facial hair ∼ Voice gets deeper

  15. Sexual abstinence is the practice of refraining from some or all aspects of sexual activity for medical, psychological, legal, social, philosophical or religious reasons.

Advantages of Sexual abstinence • Helps a new relationship to grow in a healthy way • Taking care of your well-being • Health Risks such as STI’s • Teen Pregnancy -interruption of education -early marriage with likelihood of divorce -high risk of poverty -low infant survival rates • Can reduce worry and create a feeling of freedom • Abstinence is the ONLY method that can be 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and STI’s.

  17. How to cope with sexual pressures • External pressures to become sexually active include: peer pressure, images in movies, and TV. • Internal pressures are a person’s biological urges toward being sexually active. • Thinking ahead – find ways of expressing love and sexual feelings so that both people benefit. • Channeling sexual energy into other activities such as dancing, sports, or walking.
