  2. WHERE DID THE PEOPLE COME FROM? • Illyrians were the first inhabitants • Slavs came in from the north in 600 BC

GOVERNMENT • Roman Empire • 176 – 395 • Gained independence from Serbia in 960 • Became part of Empire in 13th century • Gained independence in early 1300’s • In 1376 Bosnian king Steven Tvrtko declared himself king of Bosnia and Serbia • Fighting continued until king united countries at this time • Ottoman Empire attacked in 1383 • Took Serbia and ruled for 400 years—Serbia adopted Ottoman culture and religion in this time

  4. WARS AND CONFLICTS • Ethnic cleansing • Croats went after Bosnians • Serbs backed Yugoslavian government and ideas • Took place mostly after independence was declared but also a lot of fighting during independence

  5. RELIGION • 40% are Muslim • 31% Eastern Orthodox • 15% Roman Catholic • 4% Protestant • 10% follow other religions

  6. WHAT IS THEIR ECONOMY BASED ON? • Second poorest country • Agricultural country • Makes 19% of GDP • Still not enough food need to import • In 1998 they got a new currency • Convertible Mark replaced Dinar

HOW DID GEOGRAPHY IMPACT THE REGION? • Named after Drina river which is which is boarder between Serbia and Bosnia and served as boarder when Roman Empire split • Region is prone to earthquakes • Mediterranean style climate • Dry warm summers with wet mild winters • Northern regions are characterized by plateaus and plains • Southern area is mountainous and much of it is forested and was a tourist designation before the war.
