  1. K-12 OutreachMRSEC Faculty Reach over 30,000 Students Timothy P. Lodge, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, DMR 0819885 Description and Significance Using large-scale demonstrations and small-scale interactions, MRSEC faculty efforts aimed at the K-12 sector reached an astonishing 30,000 students in 2011.  Scientific performance teams, Energy & U and The Physics Force, used large-scale demonstrations to educate and entertain packed auditoriums of future scientists.  From crushing barrels and falling teachers, to all manner of explosions − scientific principles were demonstrated in engaging ways that left students cheering for more.  MRSEC faculty complemented these large-scale demonstrations with visits to individual classes throughout the Twin Cities and by hosting visits from middle and high school classes to University labs and experimental facilities. Partnerships with the Science Museum of Minnesota and the weeklong, Exploring Careers in Science and Engineering, provided additional opportunities for MRSEC Faculty to interact with the “next generation of scientists and engineers” wherever they may be.
