  1. How does this make you feel? Does this infomercial make you want to purchase this product or stay away from it? Be honest! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xZp-GLMMJ0

  2. Advertisement 101 • Advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry • One main goal: persuading people to buy products • An enormous amount of time and effort to figure out the best strategies for getting you to do exactly what they want • Consumers need to understand these techniques to buy smart

  3. Advertisement 101 • Advertisements aren't put together haphazardly! • Advertisers carefully choose techniques to persuade audiences • They are selling is a lifestyle, or an image, rather than the product • These are some of the most popular, and effective, techniques...

  4. Excitement - who could ever have imagined that food could be so much fun? One bite of a snack food and you're surfing in California, or soaring on your skateboard! Excitement can come in many different forms! • Family Fun • Ideal for Kids Family Fun is exciting for all and brings families together like nothing else can!! Open a Coke & enjoy an instant party! Ideal for Kids is meant to look like you want your kids to be...Happy and fitting in!

  5. Star Power - your favorite sports star or celebrity is telling you that their product is the best! You listen...but they get paid!! $$$$$$$ What? Bieber, LeBron, and Rihanna think it is cool? Then it must be! Sold!!!

  6. Bandwagon - join the crowd! Don't be left out! Everyone is buying the latest products: aren't you? Avant Garde: Suggests that their product puts you before the rest. But hurry, you want to be the first to buy!!!! VS.

  7. Put Downs - are when you put down your competition's product to make your own product seem better.

  8. Facts and Figures - are when you use facts and statistics to enhance your product's credibility.

  9. Repetition - advertisers hope that if you see a product, or hear its name over and over again, you will be more likely to buy it. Sometimes the same commercial will be repeated over and over again. Who doesn’t know this song?

  10. Weasel Words - by law, advertisers have to tell the truth, but sometimes, they use words that can mislead viewers. *Look for words in commercials like: "Part of..." "The taste of real..." "Natural..." "New, better tasting....." "Because we care..." There are hundreds of these deceptive sayings - how many more can you think of? Omission - is where advertisers don't give you the full story about their product. For example, when a Pop Tart claims to be "part" of a healthy breakfast, it doesn't mention that the breakfast might still be healthy whether this product is there or not. Look for the fine print!

  11. Are You Cool Enough? - this is when advertisers try to convince you that if you don't use their products, you are a nerd. This includes SNOB APPEAL Only for the rich and famous!

  12. But what about the Plain Follks? - No worries! They have techniques for you too! Good ol’ American families! For those moms (they do most of the shopping…)

  13. Magic Ingredients -This suggests the product includes some almost miraculous discovery that makes the product exceptionally effective. No diet or excercise needed? Sold!

  14. This can also be SIMPLE SOLUTIONS: One easy step to get rid of all your problems! New hair! Even in the pool! I am in love, living life, & everything is perfect! Girls can run their fingers through my hair...bliss!

  15. Bribery- Bribery seems to give a desirable extra something.  We humans tend to be greedy.
