Timeline: Before • June 12, 1929 Annelies Marie Frank is born in Frankfurt, Germany. • 1933 Frank family moves to Amsterdam, Holland, when Hitler comes to power in Germany. • June 12, 1942 Anne receives a diary for her thirteenth birthday. • July, 1942 Margot Frank gets a call to report to a transit camp. • July 6, 1942 The Frank family moves into the 'secret annex‘.

Timeline: After • Aug 4, 1944 The Franks are arrested, taken to a police station, the to Westerbork, a transit camp in Holland. • Oct 30, 1944 Anne and her sister, Margot, are sent to Bergen-Belsen. • Jan 6, 1945 Edith Frank dies of starvation in Auschwitz. • Jan 7, 1945 Auschwitz is liberated. Otto Frank is the only survivor from the annex. • March 1945 Margot dies of typhus in Bergen-Belsen. • April 1945 Anne dies of typhus in Bergen-Belsen.

ConflictA struggle between opposing forces • External Conflict: A character struggles against another person or outside force • Based on the difficult situation in which they are living • Anne and her mother, Edith, struggle with Anne’s growing up and wanting to be treated older than her mother treats her

  6. ConflictA struggle between opposing forces • Internal Conflict: A struggle within a person or character • Anne puts up a hard exterior as a defense • She is afraid people won’t respect her if they see the real Anne • She writes her true feelings in her diary

FlashbackPresenting facts that took place at an earlier time • The playwright uses flashback to set the stage for the events to follow. • Otto Frank enters the secret annex after the war and begins to read Anne’s diary aloud. • Anne’s voice overlaps with his as she begins to tell the story through her diary.

ExpositionSets the tone, establishes setting, introduces characters, and give background information • The narrator gives information to set the stage for the readers • In play form, much of this information is presented through sets, costuming and stage directions • The exposition is an important part of all literature to draw the reader into the story • All the action takes place in the ‘secret annex’

Rising ActionThe events in a story that move the plot forward • Anne begins to realize hiding is more difficult than she originally thought • She is in constant fear during the night, jumping at every sound, afraid the Nazi’s are coming for her • Anne’s personality clashes with the others in hiding, especially with her mother and Peter • The tension with all inhabitants is escalating, causing various problems throughout the story

ClimaxThe turning point of the story • The climax usually occurs toward the end of the story, after the reader has become emotionally involved with the characters • The arrival of the Nazis to the ‘secret annex’ marks the climax of the story • All the tension that has built throughout the plot reaches its peak and ends here

ResolutionConflicts are resolved by the end of the story • Throughout the story, a number of minor conflicts are resolved while in the ‘secret annex’ • Anne and Peter begin to become friends • Anne’s relationship with her mother becomes better • Everyone is so happy about the end of the war, they forget their grudges against each other • Mr. Frank’s final speech resolves the major conflict set out at the beginning of they play telling what happened after their discovery in the ‘secret annex’.

  12. How Did It Happen? • German military attacked The Netherlands • Identification of Dutch Jews with yellow stars and laws discriminating against them • In 1942 the Germans began sending them to concentration camps • Of the 140,000 Jews living there, 102,000 were exterminated by the Nazis

Historical Facts • World War II lasted about six years. • Over 6,000,000 Jews were killed by the Nazis in the concentration and death camps during the Holocaust!This was established by the Nuremberg tribunal in 1946. • Some people believe the Holocaust did not happen. • Others believe Anne Frank did not write her dairy, but that her father, Otto Frank did, to profit off the deaths of those in the ‘secret annex’
