  • Optimized networks for voice and data

  • Service integration requires unified network

    • no difference between media (voice, data, video)

    • no media dependent calls, but media independent sessions

Benefit of ip transport migration l.jpg

Benefit of IP transport migration

  • Few full IP network planned / in deployment

  • Smooth E2E evolution towards full IP of transport architecture

    • Stepped approach addressing first data traffic growth with IuPS over IP & Hybrid Iub

    • Migrate all interfaces (Iub, Iu-CS, Iur) to IP in a second step.

MARKET VIEW

  • E2E QoS & reliability:

    • Guaranteed thanks to MPLS/IP/Ethernet

  • CAPEX & OPEX savings:

    • IP/Ethernet cost efficiency

    • IP-based UTRAN cost is much less than ATM-based UTRAN

    • Pseudo-wire is used to transport ATM over IP (one IP backbone)

    • Prepares mobile operators effectively for a future evolution to native IP in the mobile network (HSPA+, LTE solution)

    • Single IP network for the Transport Plane, the Control Plane, and the Operations and Maintenance Plane

China Unicom: 3G HSPA deployment

China s telecom market overview l.jpg

China’s telecom market overview

China unicom 3rd largest mobile operator in the world l.jpg

China Unicom: 3rd largest mobile operator in the world

  • 3G in China : Three licenses

    • China Mobile: TD-SCDMA

    • China Telecom: Pursue CDMA2000 EV-DO path (howeverchoose LTE for 4G)

    • China Unicom: Choose 3G WCDMA

      • WCDMA vendor: Alcatel-Lucent, in fact Alcatel Shanghai Bell (ASB)

      • WCDMA HSxPA product: last version with hybrid Iub & Iu-PS over IP

      • Core network: Huawei’s MSTP solution

Mobile business market share

Fixed business market share

How can the alu win the contract l.jpg

How can the ALU win the contract?

  • Procurement: ALU (ASB), Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE

    • Each vendor did a trial  China Unicom then made a choice

  • To win this contract, ALU must propose very low price (the same as the one proposed by Huawei)

    • Consider the gain for the long term and from the support

  • The following steps were taken to secure the deal …..

    • Persuade customers

    • Lobby customers

    • Set reasonable price

    • No ASB, ALU cannot win the contract due to political issue (local vendor)
