1. Impressionism

3. Characteristics of Impressionism: 1) subject matter drawn from life and the activity of Parisian middle class 2) influenced by the scientific discoveries in the area of the mechanics of visual perception 3) the Impressionist aesthetic seems to have been greatly influenced by the new vision offered by photography, especially the effect known as halation, common in photographs taken at this time, which produced a fuzzy image similar to the fuzzy, atmospheric images produced in many Impressionist paintings

4. Characteristics cont… 4) Impressionist composition was very much influenced by Japanese wood cuts 5) made use of newer, brighter synthetic pigments now available in tubes 6) most done outdoors 7) eliminated brown and black from their palette

5. Characteristics cont… 8) images become softer and fuzzier as the artists become more aware of object in environmental relationship 9) the paint surface is broken into dabs of pure color that are intended to be visually blended by the viewer's eye 10) the Impressionist aesthetic was sensually objective and not emotional 11) there is still a need to depict illusionistic representational space
