ATR Background • The UK is the 10th highest drinking in the country. • The Yorkshire and Humberside regions are the highest for binge drinking. • Partnership developed between Primary Care Trust & Criminal Justice Service. • Highlighted link between violent crime and alcohol. • Reduction in the incidence of alcohol related crime became a key priority in the Local Area Agreement.

  3. ATR Background • 2006 proposal to pilot ATR through a partnership between West Yorkshire Probation and the Wakefield & District Alcohol Team. • Sentencing -Available for high, medium and low risk offenders. -Can be used as a stand alone order for low risk. • March 2007 -Two Alcohol Treatment Practitioners recruited.

  4. ATR Pathway Referral Assessment ATR Granted Treatment

Referral Procedure • Received from court or Offender Manager. • Audit C Screening Tool completed by Offender Manager -Establishes alcohol typology. • Wakefield & District Alcohol Team Comprehensive Assessment - Motivational Interviewing Based. - Alcohol History/Social Circumstances/Offending History - Health & Well Being - Motivation.

  7. Treatment Process • Stepped Approach • Care Plan Devised • Motivational Interviewing • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy • Preparation for Medical Detoxification

  8. Treatment Process • Tailored Medical Detoxification Regime • Review with GP • Relapse Prevention Sessions • Revisit Care Plan

  9. Statistics • Assessments 10th July 2007 to September 2008 134 completed 83 ATR`s issued 62% of Assessments conducted have resulted in an ATR

  11. Case Study • 35 year old ex service man. • 12 year problematic drinking • Diagnosed with Schizophrenia 2000 • 5 separate offences linked to alcohol • ATR granted December 2007

  12. Case Study • “I had always been around alcohol; the military has a hardened drinking culture”. • “I was apprehensive about my first visit”. • “I was asked the think about the types and amounts that I drunk and that made me think”.

  13. Case Study Continued… “I found it easy to work with the alcohol team and the probation service”. “A few weeks ago I started a detox programme”.

  14. Case Study Outcome • “Up to present I have been alcohol free and hope to continue this”. • “It is thanks to the ATR that I am where I am and it is greatly appreciated”. • Now stable on anti-psychotic medication.

  15. Case study • 40 year old female • Alcohol dependant for 10 years. • Long history of depression and deliberate self-harm. • Perpetrator of domestic violence. • 6 Months ATR granted.

  16. Case Study Continued… • Alcohol use monitored through ‘drink diaries’. • Gradual reduction plan followed. • Pharmaceutical intervention. • Abstinence achieved within 3 months.

  17. Case Study Outcome • No longer taking anti-depressants • No further deliberate self-harm • Rebuilding relationships “I feel good about myself for the first time”

  18. Future Aspirations ATR’s as part of licence conditions Assessments In Custody Presenting ATR to other districts in the hope of rolling it out nationwide!
