Legalism in the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C. – 206 B.C) • Qin Shi Huangdi founds the Qin Dynasty in 221 B.C. ends Era of Warring States, turns to the philosophy of Legalism to bring order to China: 1. View of human nature → Humans are evil and corrupt. 2. All power should be held by one powerful ruler who keeps people in line. 3. The ruler has the right to impose cruel and harsh punishments, even for minor crimes

  4. I. Legalism in the Qin Dynasty B. Examples of Legalism under Qin Shi Huangdi: 1. He unites China under a centralized government → power comes from a single source • Establishes one monetary system • Builds roads uniting China • Weakens the aristocracy

  5. I. Legalism in the Qin Dynasty 2. He creates a censorate→ Inspectors who made sure government officials were obeying the king. 3. Orders that “dangerous” books be burned. 4. Extends China’s border south to bring even more territory under his rule. Links sections of existing defensive walls together to build “The Great Wall of China” in the north.

  6. Concluding Questions • It has been argued that Qin Shi Huangdi unified China at the expense of human freedom. What do you think is more important to have in a society: stability or freedom? • Based on our discussions, which philosophy do you think is most effective in bringing order and stability to a civilization: Confucianism, Taoism or Legalism? Why?
