  2. I. Rich Egyptians lived on large estates along the Nile River • Had wood and brick houses with gardens and pools • Brightly colored paintings • Household consisted of: • Owners’ family • Servants • Artisans who would build boats and weave linens.

  3. II. A small number of rich people become scribes: • Job passed down from father to son • Trained in schools within the temples • Used Hieroglyphics: Writing system in which pictures stand for words, sounds and ideas. • First recorded on stone and clay tablets • Later recorded on reeds called papyrus (world’s first paper-like material). The Letter M Symbol for Man

Most Egyptians were poor farmers who lived in villages on or near an estate • Lived in houses made of reeds and mud, later sun baked bricks • Had one room with a roof made of palm leaves • Built on high ground to avoid floods • Spent their days working in the fields, taking care of cattle, digging ditches, and repairing roads.
