  2. I. Rich Egyptians lived on large estates along the Nile River • Had wood and brick houses with gardens and pools • Brightly colored paintings • Household consisted of: • Owners’ family • Servants • Artisans who would build boats and weave linens.

  3. II. A small number of rich people become scribes: • Job passed down from father to son • Trained in schools within the temples • Used Hieroglyphics: Writing system in which pictures stand for words, sounds and ideas. • First recorded on stone and clay tablets • Later recorded on reeds called papyrus (world’s first paper-like material). The Letter M Symbol for Man

Most Egyptians were poor farmers who lived in villages on or near an estate • Lived in houses made of reeds and mud, later sun baked bricks • Had one room with a roof made of palm leaves • Built on high ground to avoid floods • Spent their days working in the fields, taking care of cattle, digging ditches, and repairing roads.

  5. Concluding Activity • In 1-2 sentences, tell me one thing that you learned about Egypt from today’s lesson that you didn’t know before. Write these sentences in hieroglyphics, using the alphabet sheet in front of you. Include and English translation of what you wrote.
