  2. I. Pronunciation • # 1 to 4 • Identify the syllable that receives emphasis • Never uses monosyllabic (one syllable) words • Example: • A B C spas mo dic • The answer is B.

Parts of Speech • #5 to 10 • Four choices • Could feature any part of speech of any word • 8 parts of speech: noun, adjective, adverb, verb, pronoun (?), interjection (?), preposition (?), and conjunction (?) • Tip: Not all parts of speech will become vocabulary words. • Example: • Relinquish A. Verb B. Noun C. Adjective D. Adverb • The answer is A.

  4. III. Definitions • #11 to 20 • Four choices • Could feature any definition of any word • Example: • A problem A. debris B. breach C. deadlock D. dilemma • The answer is D.

  5. IV. Synonyms • #21 to 26 • Four choices • Example: • A spurious promise A. careful B. genuine C. deceptive D. friendly • The answer is C.

  6. V. Antonyms • #27 to 30 • Four choices • Tip: Remember it is the opposite of the definition!! • Example: salvage the ship A. repair B. dock C. destroy D. sail • The answer is C.

  7. VI. Sentence Completion • #31 to 50 • 20 sentences • 20 words in word bank • Each word is used once and only once • Could feature the word in any of its designated parts of speech • May require the use of an –ed or –ing ending for a verb • May require the use of a plural form for a noun • Tip: When in doubt, think of which part of speech the blank requires and narrow down the choices in your word bank accordingly.
