  1. Seeking Clues to Gangs and Crime, Detectives Monitor Internet Rap Videos USA Today Written by: Joseph Goldstein and J. David Goodman Published: Jan 7, 2014 Topic: Crime Presentation by Craig Gibson

  2. INVESTIGATION GOES DIGITAL • Police are starting to watch rap videos posted online to aid in their investigations of gangs • Last December, a video was used as evidence in cases against 11 gang members

  3. MAKING CONNECTIONS • The videos are being used to help police make connections between members of gangs in New York City • If connections can be made, prosecutors can show that crimes are part of a conspiracy rather than being isolated events

  4. NEW WORLD, NEW METHODS • Using music videos is part of the new methods having to be used since police can no longer use stop-and-frisk methods • Because this technique is so new, police are trying not to say too much because they want rappers to keep posting videos

  5. YOUTUBE MAKES THINGS GLOBAL • The broad access to YouTube has been cited as the reason that this technique has become so useful • Also, the ability for the music to spread quickly on YouTube has caused “local beefs” to get more attention because YouTube gets the rappers a much larger audience 100 hours every minute

  6. RAPPERS AND GANGS • They are using rap videos because many believe rappers to be closely connected to gang activity in NY City • Police see the rappers more often as criminals rather than artists/musicians

  7. Significance • Police are using new tactics to investigate crime, especially gang related. • The things we post on the internet can affect us in “real” life as well.
