  1. Welcome to Mini-School!! Texas History Mrs. Luann Hailey

  2. My Class Objective • To create a learning environment where the students feel safe, comfortable, and cared about • To make Texas History as interesting and fun as possible! • To encourage students to think and analyze

  3. Grading Policy • 35% = homework • 20% = daily and/or completion grades (formative assessments, write for understanding, Edmodo responses, etc) • 45% = tests • Will follow the 7th grade policies for late work, etc • 20 points off for one day late • Zeros are not fun and they kill a grade…require work to be done for lowest grade of 50

Texas History Curriculum • Geography/Early Texans (currently doing this) • Government • European Contact and Influence • Revolutions • Republic of Texas • Statehood • Civil War and Reconstruction • Growth and Change (ranching, cattle, oil, World War I, Great Depression, World War II, etc • Modern Texas/Current Events will be interspersed throughout the year

What We Will Be Doing in Class • Texas History textbook (some) • Digital Classroom • Used as another tool in learning • I Pad for every student • 7 Mac Book Air laptops Projects, research, etc…more info to come • Will be soon sending home a technology use agreement with details, etc…students will need your help setting up some accounts, etc • Concentrate on Edmodo, Quia, DropBox, and Evernote as well as GCISD approved apps

What We Will Be Doing in Class, con’t • Skill of note-taking • Using Cornell Notes format • Format paper on my website • Power Points for visuals • Include text, pictures, videos, etc • Posted on my website • Skill of learning to write a good Thesis Statement • Supporting what you believe and why • Group work, collaboration, critical thinking, analysis, etc

  7. Discoveries Classes • Critical thinking/analysis skills • Document , photo, political cartoon, etc analysis • Document Based Questions • Break down ideas and thoughts to create good thesis statements • Much higher level thinking skills/more creative work • Writing • Socratic Seminars

My Website • List learning plan for week • Reading/homework assignments • Check if student is absent—know what missed and what need to do • Test dates • Other important info • Power Point lessons/homework posted • Good books to read about Texas History • Good websites for Texas History • Class expectations, etc • Check it frequently and encourage child to do so also
