  2. Kaleidoscope The Kaleidoscope Project is using open educational resources (OER) to improve student success. The project was initiated in 2011 by Cerritos College, Chadron State College, Mercy College, College of the Redwoods, Palo Verde College, Santa Ana College, Thanos Partners and Tompkins Cortland Community College, and was funded through an NGLC grant. Kaleidoscope engages cross-institutional faculty teams to create complete, open course designs for general education courses using OER. The course designs eliminate textbook costs as a barrier to student success, and allow faculty control to modify and improve course materials based on learning results. Kaleidoscope is supporting institutional leaders to use open education as a strategic lever to address access, cost, and success issues for students. 4. Improving Student Success With Open Educational Resources • Kaleidoscope is creating and implementing a set of open, general education courses across colleges serving predominantly at-risk students. The project dramatically reduces textbook costs and allows collaborative improvement of the course designs to improve student success. • The Kaleidoscope approach is unique. The partners are using open education as an institutional strategy to improve student success, with faculty guiding the work. The partners are: • 1. Aligning Kaleidoscope with institutional strategies and goals. Senior academic leaders from each partner institution engage to support faculty and align results with institutional goals. • 2. Collaborating across institutions. Faculty members from across partner institutions gather to create and enhance the course designs, and share effective teaching approaches. • 3. Adopting open educational resources (OER). The faculty teams assess and leverage existing OER. We adopt and improve the best of existing OER developed and published by colleges and universities around the world. • 4. Sharing evaluation results. Kaleidoscope partners share their results, allowing for collaborative improvement of the course designs and the program approach. Home Institution Innovator Our Innovation Visit Us Contact
