  2. Alternative Realities • In Plato’s “Parable of the Cave” he suggested that our awareness of everyday life is based on a mistake • He also said that there is shadow and light, that we mistake the both of them for each other

  3. Sensory Deprivation • One goes into a place that is dark with no noise, nothing special touched, and no food is eaten • Sometimes may have consistent calm noise • Can result in body image distortions, vivid, dream like imagery, enhanced suggestibility and hallucinations occur • Native Americans go on what they call a vision quest

  4. Out of Body Experience’s • When one seems to see the world from a location outside the body • Only 3 out of 70 non-Western cultures claim OBE’s do not occur • 14-34% claim to have experienced an OBE • Usually occur when body is in a relaxed mindstate

  5. Sensory Deprivation Tank • Created in mid 1950’s by Jon Lilly • Special water, including salt helps you float

  6. Psychomanteum • Used in ancient Greece, underground chamber, which one would look at reflective objects • 55% in a recent study down by Moody, claimed they had visionary experiences of departed love ones

  7. Drugs • The use of plants to induce unusual experiences has been documented on every continent • Drugs such as peyote, marijuana, and “magic mushrooms”(Psilocybin) have been used in religious ceremonies

  8. Marijuana • Causes hallucinations, usually vocal/heard ones • Some cultures, such as the Rastafarians, use this to get closer to their gods

  9. Psilocybin • Also known as magic mushrooms • Make you hallucinate • Usually eaten

  10. Peyote • Hallucinogen mescaline is the active ingredient • Either eaten or soaked in liquid and drank • Again makes you hallucinate

  11. DMT • Oddest part is it is naturally found in brain, and is said to be what possibly makes us dream • Usually snorted • Some religions/tribes will snort this so that they can get closer to their god and hopefully see images of them

Tim Leary • “Turn on, tune in, drop out” • Used to describe the experience of entering of an acid trip • “Dropping out” can be either an amazing or horrifying experience while on LSD • Discover things one may not of know about them self • Wanted to help others achieve trip • Once was a Harvard Professor

  13. Hallucinations • Most commonly in visual form, but can mimic any of the senses • Be the result of a mental disorder such as schizophrenia, body being under some sort of physical stress, or drugs • 71% of American College students claimed to have experienced them

Depersonalization and Derealization • Depersonalization is when one may experience a feeling that mind and body are not actually themselves • 70% of adolescents claimed to report short bouts of it • Derealization, is a feeling like everything around you in the environment is unreal • Commonly associated withhigh anxiety, and anxietydisorders

  15. Lucid Dreaming • One realizes that they are actually dreaming • In this realization, one can do whatever they want in a dream • 80% of people claimed that within their life time they have experienced at least one lucid dream
