  2. Welcome to ‘A Taste of Evolution’ day! Today you will discover some of the mysteries of the Galapagos Islands and explore the fascinating animals that live there. Firstly, let’s remind ourselves of 5 facts we already know about the islands….   3. In 1831 a scientist on board the HMS Beagle visited the Galapagos Islands. His name was Charles Darwin. As the scientist on board, it was his job to make observations on the wildlife that inhabited the places he visited, as well as to collect samples to take back to study in England. Charles Darwin had an enquiring mind, and on his return had many questions about the animals of the Galapagos that he wanted to find the answers to.   4. He had observed that the islands were a harsh environment for new species arriving, with little vegetation, strong sun and volcanic rocks. He realised only the strongest animals would be able to survive and reproduce. After years of studying his Galapagos specimens and field notes, combined with investigations carried out in England, Darwin came to realise something very important- The good, strong characteristics that allowed species to survive were passed on to their young and eventually the species changed and adapted over time. If changes were big enough a new species could emerge. Darwin realised it was this process that was the answer to many of his questions from the islands.
