  1. JESUS’ MISSION MANUAL:ISAIAH 52:13-53:12(2) THE SERVANT’S LIFE Penge Baptist Church April 17th 2011

  2. Recall • Did Jesus come to earth “fully programmed”? Or did God give him clues in his word, with insight from the Holy Spirit? • Jesus’ words suggest a powerful influence of Scripture, especially the Book of Isaiah • 52:13-15 tells of a servant of God, exalted but also disfigured terribly, who will save Israel and bless (“sprinkle”) many peoples and nations • We too are called to be God’s servants, as Jesus was, continuing his mission

  3. Today’s text: Isaiah 53:1-4 • Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.

  4. A question of revelation • Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? • Jesus and his message of salvation was little believed or followed in his lifetime • And yet he was “the arm of the Lord” – God himself • His true nature is something that can only be revealed by the Holy Spirit • Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:3)

  5. Judging by appearances • He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. • Today’s cult of celebrity

  6. Jesus’ humble life • She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:7) • Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? (Matthew 13:55) • Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20) • No “favoured roots” • Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD….. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. (Psalm 1:1-3)

  7. And his nondescript appearance “the son of man” • “how much less man, who is but a maggot— a son of man, who is only a worm!” (Job 25:6) • Humility before God’s glory • Representing the people • How could such a man be the son of God, mighty to save? Not even a king, a noble, even a priest! • And yet…. • “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD” (Isaiah 11:1-2)

  8. Familiar with rejection • He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. • Some episodes of rejection in Jesus’ life • Herod’s attempts to kill the baby Jesus (Matthew 2) • Preaching in Nazareth leading to attempts to kill him (Luke 4) • All but the 12 leave him after proclamation “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life” (John 6) • Rejected as a prophet because of where he came from (John 7)

  9. Claim to be eternal “before Abraham was born, I am” leading to attempt to stone him (John 8) • Feast of dedication “I and the Father are one.” leading to attempt to stone him (John 10) • Opposition by the Pharisees • Caiaphas and the Sadducees’ decision to kill him (John 11) • Judas’ betrayal (John 18) • The disciples’ abandonment in the garden (Matthew 26) • Peter denying Jesus three times (John 18) • The crowd calling for Barabbas to be freed (Matthew 27) • Mockery on the cross (Matthew 27) • “A man of sorrows” – assumption suffering due to sin

  10. Despite the blessings he brought • Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. • Jesus’ healing of brokenness • A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.(Isaiah 42:3) • Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

  11. But his ultimate rejection was by God himself • About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)

  12. 53:1-4 and Palm Sunday • Jesus’ triumphal entry to Jerusalem, after mighty healings (Lazarus, blind man) • People judged by appearances • “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matthew 21:9) • And soon rejected Jesus • the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they answered. “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” (Matthew 27:20-22)

  13. 53:1-4 and us • Pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten our non-Christian relatives and friends about who Jesus really is • Jesus said “Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment.” (John 7:24) • Ordinary eyes seeing Jesus suffering • Eyes of faith see the meaning behind it • Eyes of hope see the fruit to come from it

  14. Expect the same rejection as Jesus • Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”. (Matthew 16:24) • “Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.” (Luke 6:22) • Know the risk that we reject him • If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. (Luke 9:26)

  15. But bring his blessings to others • “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8)
