  2. Three Rules for Control of oneself Swift to Hear Slow to Speak Slow to Wrath “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” James 1:20

  3. Anger Wrath “Orge” “Thumos” • Indignation that has risen gradually • Settled condition of mind – revenge • Lingering – seething emotion • Sudden outburst of passionate anger • Blaze of temper – flares into violent words or deeds • Blowing off steam

  4. “Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.” Psalms 37:8 “He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly” Pr. 14:17 “He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.” Prov. 14:29 “A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but [he that is] slow to anger appeaseth strife.” Prov. 15:18

  5. “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” Prov. 16:32 “A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.” Prov. 19:19 “It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.” Prov. 21:19

He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence; And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of [their] strength in the tabernacles of Ham:” Psalms 78:49-51

  10. “For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images. When God heard [this], he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel: So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent [which] he placed among men; And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.” Ps.78:58-61

  13. Closer look at Anger and Wrath God God’s anger is always a just reaction to EVIL Rom. 1:18-2:11 His wrath is never misguided. Man’s anger is not always proper It is often misguided

  14. Closer look at Anger and Wrath Christ John 2:24-25 He had divine knowledge He did not mistakenly direct wrath Nothing of self-interest His was “HOLY ANGER” Angry for God’s honor

  15. Closer look at Anger and Wrath Man Man often uses anger improperly Silent when sin is exalted / God dishonored Angry when personally offended Try to justify it as “righteous indignation” It is really “self-righteous indignation”

  16. Closer look at Anger and Wrath Eph. 4:26 • Do Not sin • Emotion of anger must be controlled • Don’t allow it to cause us to sin • Words / Deeds • Do not let the sun go down on your wrath • Dispelled before nightfall • Give Satan opportunity • “Neither give place to the devil.” Eph.4:27

  17. Closer look at Anger and Wrath Eph. 4:26 “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:” Eph. 4:31

  18. Slow to Wrath Man’s anger does not produce results that are in line with God’s righteousness “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” James 1:20 All over in a minute

  19. Jesus tells us in Matt. 5:22 • “But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment:” • Causeless anger is prohibited • But not righteous indignation • Jesus became angry at times… • But it was not without a cause
