  1. About Science • Ch. 1

  2. What is Science? • Science is a way of knowing about the world and making sense of it.

  3. What is Science? • Science is progressive and constantly changing. • Progressive- It advances and builds upon previous ideas • Changing – Scientific knowledge is not completely certain • New ideas, experiments, technology, etc allow for scientific ideas to be changed, altered, or adapted • This change is often opposed or unwelcomed. • Ex – Copernicus, Galileo • Science is in NO WAY absolute or final!!!!

  4. About Science • Math is NOT science - it is only a tool used in science. • Equations in Science - shorthand ways of seeing and understanding the connections and relationships of nature • Are used as a guide to thinking - they help us understand the concepts. • Are useless unless the concepts are understood.

  5. The Scientific Method • A method based on logical, or ordered, thinking and experimentation. • It is a useful tool that guides scientific work, but doesn’t always follow the same order. • There are 5 basic steps

  6. Scientific Method • 1. Observation - Recognize a question or a problem - one must have a desire or need to figure something out. • Five senses are used!

  7. Scientific Method • 2. Hypothesize - A hypothesis is an educated guess that must be testable. • It is the basis for experimentation

  8. Scientific Method • 3. Experiment - test to see if the hypothesis is correct. • Must be repeatable - one must get the same results over and over.

  9. Scientific Method • 4. Analyze the results of the experiment • How do the experimental results compare to your hypothesis or prediction?

  10. Scientific Method • 5. Form a conclusion - the conclusion organizes the observations, hypothesis, and the analysis of the experiment. • Rules are inferred, or concluded, from the evidence gathered from the 3 previous steps.

  11. Theory • A set of ideas that have been repeatedly tested, and the same results have occurred for each test.

  12. Observation vs. Inference • Observation – Made using the 5 senses • Inference – Use prior knowledgeand experiences
