  1. Ephesians and Colossians Paul with Friends and Acquaintances

  2. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • Ephesians 1:1-23 • A quick review of verses 1 to 10. • Notice the doctrine Paul outlines in these verses. • We have all spiritual blessings. • Christ (and we) chosen from the beginning • In Christ we have redemption. • In Christ is the fullness of all.

  3. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • Ephesians 1:11-22 • Verse 11 continues a thought begun in verse 1. “In Him” . Chapter 1 tells us what we have obtained “In Christ” • In Him we have • (1) faithfulness • (3) Spiritual Blessings • (4) chosen to be holy • (6) adoption

  4. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • “IN CHRIST” • (7) Redemption • (9) Knowledge of the Mystery of salvation • (10) fullness of times • (11) we have an inheritance • (12) hope • (13) Sealed in Christ– who is the Pledge for the Contract • (15) faith and love

  5. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • “IN CHRIST” • (20) Hang on here. . . • Hope of His calling • Riches of His inheritance • Surpassing greatness of His power in us • All based in God’s raising Christ from the Dead. • Christ is the Right Hand of God • Above all authority • Lord of the Church

  6. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • Colossians 1:11-23 • Paul begins this letter praising the Colossians for their faith. • Notice that he does not immediately address a doctrinal problem. • The focus of Colossians is the Gospel • Verse 5-6. • Gospel is hope • It is present and future

  7. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • Colossians 1 • Paul believes in prayer. He wants the Believers to • Be filled with knowledge • Walk worthy of Christ • Bear fruit • Bear burdens with Power.

  8. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • Colossians 1:11-23 • The Dualities. Paul speaks of light and darkness, of spirit and of body, of sin and grace, because these are Greeks. Their philosophy was Socratic– based on the Ideal and the Mundane.\ • Paul uses this language to challenge their beliefs and break down their pagan ideals. • It is a great model. These were not weak Christians. Why would he do this, then?

  9. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • I think the point of these verses is that Paul wants these Christians to think of the subtle doctrines that we are acculturated into. • We are socialized into set ways of thinking. For example:

  10. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • The Dualities in Colossians • Light and Dark (12 and 13) • Invisible and Visible (16) • Heaven and Earth (16; 20) • These dualities build up to verse 16. • Paul claims that God is in all and creates all. • The Colossians probably believed that the physical world was evil and • The spiritual world was pure

  11. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • Paul attacks a key philosophy of Greece head-on. • They believed in the duality of nature. That the flesh is sinful and the spirit world is pure. God could never be a man. • Notice how Paul addresses that question. Verses 15; 17; 20 – 22. • Notice God’s sovereignty in these verses in addressing a modern heresy. Which one?

  12. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • What do we learn about Christ in these verses? • Our salvation is secured In Him. • Our salvation was ordained from the foundation of the world. • In Christ our salvation brings richness and fulness. • Our salvation is pledged by Christ himself.

  13. EPHESIANS AND COLOSSIANS • For next week • Colossians 1:23-2:4 • Philippians 2:1-13. • Philippians 2:1 is a Great Verse.
