  1. SESAME Booster Status Maher Attal On behalf of : SESAME Technical Staff TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  2. Answers to the last TAC Recommendations By changing working point (2.22, 2.13) (2.22, 1.31), vertical amplification factor is reduced by ~ factor 2. working point (2.22, 2.13) working point (2.22, 1.31)  Introduced misalignments: 0.2 mm shifts 0.2 mrad tilts in dipoles & quadrupoles.  In Booster, there are no main vertical correctors, and it seems we don’t need. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  3. Answers to the last TAC Recommendations Calculate emittance variation during ramping starting with Microtronemittance (1rms) (1 e-6 m.rad) and see if it agrees with the booster design equilibrium emittance @ 800 MeV.  Official BESSY documents says booster emittance @ 800MeV is < 1e-6 m.rad.  BETA code: 304e-9 m.rad AT code : 295e-9 m.rad  The calculations are done using:  Ei = 20 MeV  New ramping curve which will be shown later in this presentation. Energy spread & Beam size evolution TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  4. Injector System is Connected The injector (Booster-TL1-Microtron) is completely closed, aligned, connected to power, control, and under vacuum. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  5. Booster racks are installed in the service area PLCs for Cooling Magnet PS Pulsed elements Timing system PLCs for Vacuum Diagnostics Tracking tool Dipole PS Diagnostics Quadrupole PS Corrector PS Network TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  6. Booster Alignment Booster magnets are aligned to the rms values (the requirement is  0.2 mm/mrad): x = ±0.17mm, z = ±0.09mm, s = ±0.07mrad, and s = ±0.27mm  Due to this promising alignment, the expected orbit distortion [tunes (2.22, 1.31)] is: BPMs and Correctors are aligned to less accuracy due to the lack of flexibility and the missing alignment fiducials. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  7. Booster Alignment Booster was aligned in a professional way, thanks to SOLEIL and SOLEIL alignment group: Alain LESTRADE, Cedric BOURGOIN, Mourad SEBDAOUI and SESAME ME group staff member Tha’er ABU HANIEH. The alignment process was done smoothly and efficiently thanks to the high cooperation and fast actions of SESAME Vacuum group and ME. Group. The injection septum has now more alignment flexibility than before, thanks to M. E. group. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  8. Magnet System: Main Magnets Magnet PS control work is completely done Magnets are connected to power, cooling & control Magnet security boxes are: installed, connected to power & PLC  Control work and GUI of security boxes are done Security boxes still need to be directly connected to the Magnets PS interlock units TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  9. Magnet System: Main Magnets: Ramping curve  A new ramping curve is recently proposed, which respects capabilities of our PS. The recently proposed curve f(t) = 0.5(1 – cos(wt)) proposed before  Withthiscurve, the ramping becomes ~140 ms longer..  The new curve has less eddy Current sext. field effect.  If it is OK for the ramping, will it be OK for beam deceleration too (in the commissioning period) ? TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  10. Injection Pulsed Elements  Connected to power and (through the interface unit) to PLC Injection septum Injection kicker  Their control work & GUI are done and tested  Still to be done:  Injection septum needs more conditioning to reach the 100kV without arcing. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  11. Corrector Magnets Booster has 6 horizontal correctors and no vertical ones Rack of correctors PS (BESSY PS are used temporarily)  They are connected to power  Connected to PLC  Still to be done:  Control work is going on.  GUI is under preparation.  Control test without GUI is going on TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  12. Vacuum System Control work is done Control test is done  4 pairs of {Pirani, IMG} gauges  3 valves  7 Ion pumps Vacuum GUI They are connected to: power, compressed air (valves), and PLC. Ion pump controller Gauge controller TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  13. RF System The system is completely installed and connected to power and control (via PLC).  The control work is done.  The GUI is done and is used to operate the system.  The cavity is conditioned. RF Cavity Transmitter PLC LLRF Rack  Still to be done: Scale analog readings (voltage, power, phase, ..) to digital values. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  14. Diagnostic System  6 BPMs (one to be used as a shaker)  DCCT & FCT  3 beam viewers  Diagnostic beamline. Diagnostic Rack Signal switcher Liberas  The 6 BPMs are connected to 6 Liberas.  The 3 beam viewers are connected to TV monitor through the signal switcher. The DCCT and FCT are on the ring but still need to be shielded (collecting offers). The diagnostic beamline still needs to be installed (its triggered camera is available).  The FCT of TL1 to be installed when its new vacuum chamber is received (from UK).  The amplifiers and splitter (required for tune measurement) are on the way. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  15. Diagnostic System Control Liberas GUIs are ready and being tested.  GUIs of signal switcher (video multiplexer) is done and being tested.  Beam viewers & signal switcher are connected to PLC (control test is going on). TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  16. Timing System Control work is done GUI is done Installation is done  Connection is done RF clock GUI VME crate RF V.L.D. beamline Inj. kicker Inj. Septum Main Magnet PS BPM Liberas System is under testing :  injection kicker is done. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  17. Radiation Safety  5 mobile Gamma/Neutron detector stations are installed and ready for operation.  At present they work independent from the booster control system.  2 portable neutron detectors are available.  2 portable gamma detectors are on the way.  Still to be done:  Integrate them into the control system (through the PSS system) and activate their interlock signals. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  18. Beam dynamics applications  A Matlab GUI is done to do some measurements needed in the commissioning using Matlab Middle Layer.  The GUI is working well on the model (simulation mode).  Still to be done:  It still needs to talk to the hardware via the Channel Access which are not connected yet. TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal

  21. General Plan for Booster Commissioning To be done with temporary safety restrictions till PSS becomes ready (JNRC permission) Booster characterization & optimization, optimizing injection efficiency. Booster characterization & optimization, reducing beam losses during ramping preparing the slow pump, extraction kicker & septum (PS, control, timing) We can use the existing PS (Thyratron based) till we have the new ones (solid state) TAC 2013, 22-23 Nov., SESAME, Maher Attal
