  1. Technology in the Early Childhood Classroom Nicholle Jones CIS 280 Final Presentation

  2. Pros- *Closing gaps between well to do and lower income families *Social interaction up while using computers *Encourage independence *Fosters thinking and creativity Cons- *Question of expense out-weighing the benefits of educational experience? *Large out lay of cash in field that is tight already *Do they really have an increased learning experience? Pros and Cons of Computers in Early Childhood Education

  3. Research is showing…. • More social (verbal) interaction when two children are on the computer. • They benefit from use when an adult is assisting them. • Have found that they have about the same attention span as if doing other activities. • Can be used to help kids expand on ideas and communicate feelings.

  4. Why aren’t ECE center using computers? • Expense • Lack of time and staffing • Workers are not familiar with the programs • Kids are happy doing things the old fashion way • Seen as a similar tool as T.V. • Centers are not aware of options that are out there….

  5. Myths Only games are available for this age group. The child will not know how to use the program. It is no different then watching T.V. Large number of creative thinking and art software are available for pre-school groups The teacher assists and they know more then you do, probably It is interactive not like T.V. Misconceptions of Computer use in the Pre-school Setting Facts-

  6. Types of Programs found useful during research • Microsoft Word (word processing) • Simple Text (word processing) • Eudora (email) • Power Point (creative production) • Kid Pix (creative production) • Kidspiration (creative production) • Netscape and Internet Explorer (informational)

  7. Microsoft Word and Simple Text • Used to identify familiar letters • Can be used by teachers to import clipart and dictate stories made up by the children. • Can be used by the teacher to make up simple assignments. • Used to produce any written portion of a class or art project, such as a journal of ideas or things that the class is tracking. • Sample project…

  8. Email • Article suggested Eudora • Kids can email friends and family • Ideas for use of emails: • Pen-pals in another country • Use pictures to tell stories, use text with help of teachers • Send information home to parents about what students did that day • Parent newsletters structured by students

  9. PowerPoint Can be used to make power point presentations Here is a power point presentation done by Jennifer Cates a student in Kindergarten in a Jefferson County School in Tennessee http://www.graves.k12.ky.us/powerpoints/elementary/

  10. Kid Pix • This is a art tool • It allows kids to create and use tools to create ideas • Here are some sample of ways it could be used… • http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/curriculum/littlekids/archive/kidpix_activities.htm

  11. Kidspiration samples • Similar program as the Inspiration we used in class • Used to help kids map out ideas • Can use a subject that you are familiar with and break it out into categories. • http://www.coweta.k12.ga.us/cweb/Kidspiration/KidActivities.htm

  12. Paint • Use to draw, which benefits eye/hand coordination. • Have templates already made and students just fill in colors. Teaches use of color and computer skills • Have kids draw pictures to a story book. • Give them time to create in a different way, or explain how something works.

  13. Template in Paint

  14. Paint Sample

  15. DigitalPhotography • Many different uses, works great in conjunction with Word and Paint. • Lower cost then some of the technologies. • Can be used with programs most purchased computers already have: Paint, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher • Kids can journal and record things within the classroom. • Has an immediate usage/result. • Example of idea….Book about Me, Letter Pages Etc.

  16. Important things to remember… • If choosing to implement technology into your ECE program ask yourself two question… • 1-Is the technology developmentally appropriate? Is it consistent with how a child develops and learns and with the child’s current developmental stage? • 2-Will the activity benefit the child?

  17. More things to remember…. • Children should be allowed to use the computer as an option not a requirement. • Children should not spend more than an hour a day doing computer activities. • Children should always be supervised when using the computer. • Discuss the rules of computer use with the children before they are allowed access to the computer.

  18. Summary • Computers can be useful • If creative can find low cost ideas to implement in any environment. • Ask if the technology is going to hinder or help teach the concepts. • As the teacher be educated about the programs and technologies you might implement.
