Judaism. The faith is began by the Prophet Abraham He is contacted by Yahweh(God) and offered the Covenant. Exodus from Egypt Moses frees the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and leads them on a 40 year trek back to the promised land of Canaan, in modern day Israel.

The faith is began by the Prophet Abraham • He is contacted by Yahweh(God) and offered the Covenant. • Exodus from Egypt • Moses frees the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and leads them on a 40 year trek back to the promised land of Canaan, in modern day Israel. • Through Moses a more concrete Judaism emerges. • 10 Commandments, Torah Origins

  3. Canaan becomes Israel • King David forges a nation • King Solomon creates a center for worship The promised land • Trouble Comes • Jerusalem is sacked by the Babylonians and the Temple burns. • After Israel is reclaimed Roman conquest comes and the Temple falls, never to rise again.

  4. Monotheistic Religion • The Covenant • A binding agreement between the Jewish people and God • Keeping the Covenant is to be Righteous • Being Good Brings Good • No Heaven or Hell, but there will be a Resurrection Principles of Judaism

  5. The “Bris” • Infant circumcision, part of the Covenant • Three Parts • Blessing and Circumcision, Kiddush and Naming, Seudat Mitzvah • Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah • At 13 for a boy, 12 for a girl • Its is a Title, the celebration is not necessary Ceremonies

Yom Kippur • Day of Atonement for the previous years sins • 25 hour fast, Sabbath rules against work apply • Some strict rules, like no leather shoes. • Passover • Celebrates the Spring planting, Commemorates the Exodus from Egypt • No leavened bread, chametz • Chanukah • Festival of Lights • Miracle of the Oil • Fried Foods Holidays

  7. Israel as a product of “Zionism” • The idea that Jews as a people should have a homeland • Began in the late 19th century • Israel is created after World War II, 1948 • Already a Palestinian population • Conflict and Expansion Israel Today
