America • The Great Depression originated in The United States • Originally Hoover was president, but after the crash and the Bonus Army incident, Roosevelt came to be president • A common misconception is that Black Tuesday and the stock crash caused the unemployment and lack of family income. • The New Deals called for money to be insured and that it would get paid back if lost. • President Roosevelt passed several programs to create Jobs • Employment and average income increased. • World War II would get us out of the depression.

England • Still Recovering from World War I • America’s depression spread around the world. • To balance the budget September 10th, 1931 Philip Snowden, Chancellor, issued an emergency budget, which immediately instituted a round of cuts in public spending and wages • This caused a mutiny in the Royal Navy • Winston Churchill was appointed minister when World War II started

Germany • Was about 10$ Billion in debt after World War I • Unemployment soared, especially in larger cities, and the political systemveered toward extremism • Hitler was a rising politician who became popular during this recession, mainly because of his book, “Mein Kampf” • He became chancellor in 1933, but was favoring anti-Semitism and made a New Nazi party • He gained territory which eventually led to World War II

Italy • In 1922, Benito Mussolini rose up to power as a totalitarian leader • The dictator and his fascist party crushed all opposition • Allied with Germany until Mussolini and his party was gotten rid of • Allegiance with Germany against communism is created in 1936 • Mussolini sided with Hitler striving for territorial expansion

Major Issues Facing our Country • We were without money • During the later years of the decade, people wanted to be isolationists • The people didn’t want war with Germany • Japanese to American relations were getting tense • World War was on the verge of happening, and started on September 1, 1939

How They Sought to Resolve the Issues • Germany, Hitler tried and somewhat succeeded on pinning it on Jewish people • In England, Neville Chamberlain tries to create peace with Hitler by allowing him to annex the Sudetenland • In the US, Roosevelt passed the first and second New Deal which set up a lot of government funded programs • Overall, Hitler’s war is what got us out of the depression
