  2. Facts • 1 out of every 5 drivers will be involved in a car accident per year. • Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death of people of age 44 and under. • Approximately 35,000 people die every year due to car accidents. 50% of these could be saved if seat belts were worn. • More than 90% of people believe seat belts are a good idea yet only 14% actually use them.

  3. More Facts • 80% of all death to children in a motor vehicle accident could be prevented if wearing a seat belt. • For survivors, medical costs are 50% higher for those not wearing a seatbelt. • Also if you get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt it will cost a lot of money.

  4. Some more Facts • The majority of all car accidents occur within 25 miles from home. • 80% of all serious fatalities occur in cars going 40 mph or slower. • You may be a good driver, but there are situations you can’t control like bad road conditions, weather, and other drivers on the road.

  5. Common Excuses • I’m a good driver, I don’t need to wear it. • There too uncomfortable, I can’t move around in them. • If I’m driving slow and in a slow area, how can I get hurt anyway? • I have an airbag, I don’t need a seatbelt. • I’m afraid the belt will trap me in the car.

  6. What a seatbelt does? • In a crash they: • Increases the limit it takes the occupant to stop. • Spreads force of impact throughout a larger portion of your body. • Minimizes contact with interior of car and also prevents getting thrown out of vehicle. • 73% of people thrown out of a vehicle are killed.

  7. Reasons to wear • It’s the law in every state except New Hampshire. • Your face is less likely to hit the windshield if you're wearing a seat belt because it stops your inertia. That is, if your car is going 60 miles an hour and suddenly stops, your face won't hit the windshield going 60 miles an hour. • Keeps you from being thrown from vehicle. • Prevent driver and passengers from banging into each other. • #1 safety device.

  8. More Reasons • Air bags are less effective and useless if not wearing a seatbelt. • Increases chances of being alert in a car accident. In case there is a fire, or submerged under water. • Also helps keep pregnant women alive, which is number one thing a woman can do to protect her unborn kid.
