  1. Individual Evaluation Task 4 – Healthy food for kids

  2. When you have completed the task you do an evaluation where you evaluate • reflect on your performance in relation to the processes and outcomes of practical activities, i.e. consider the decision making processes, your management processes and the final result. • consider possible improvements you could make? What would they be? • comment on the use of the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Food Choices program in devising a suitable menu • reflect on the issue of childhood obesity.

  3. REMEMBER • An evaluation is written in the past tense – it has already happened. • Maximum 400 words OR • 3 minutes oral or 3 mins multi modal (power point etc)

  4. Performance Standards • You need to provide evidence against the performance standards to achieve the grade -check your task sheet • R1 Reflection on the processes and outcomes of practical and group activities, including their own performance. • R3 Reflection on contemporary issues related to child development.

  5. Introduction • Brief – to the point – don’t waste words – don’t repeat the full description from the action plan, say how the dish satisfied the task Exemplar • The dish, Cheesy Chicken Bites with salad and pita bread allowed for the demonstration of safe food handling and work practices with a child from the Year 1 class.

  6. theprocessesinvolved in the planning and the outcomes of those • in this case you will discuss the decisions you made as a result of using food choices to make the decision • Exemplar: Theprocessesinvolved provided the child with a variety of kitchen safety concepts and experiences. Laminated recipe cards with simply written cooking instructions, photographsof the equipment and the final presentation did engage the child. The safety work sheet successfully showed key points such as washing hands and only walking in the kitchen area. A child’s size apron was negotiated from the Year 1 teacher as our aprons would have been too long and dangerous to wear. This was graded at an “A” standardbecause it met the following criteria Reflection Insightful reflection on the processes and outcomes of practical and group activities, including their own performance.

  7. now look at your own performance in the practical application, the processes you used and the outcomes of these Exemplar • A decision to use plastic gloves was hygienic and made the student feel comfortable. This was the first time the student had handled meat. The student enjoyed wearing the gloves and understood the need to take them off after handling the chicken. Direct instruction was evident when explaining the concept of raw chicken and cross contamination. This child understood the importance of keeping raw chicken separate from the salad and pita bread. This was graded at an “A” standardbecause it met the following criteria Evaluation Insightful evaluation of the processes and outcomes of a practical activity.

  8. the processesinvolved in the practical application • The student successfully followed the demonstration showing how to crumb the chicken tenderloins using an egg and breadcrumb mixture. The trickiest part of the practical was when the student used cling wrap to cover the chicken. • To create the salad, the student was shown how to use a knife safely and handle different shapes of food. The student observed and imitated these skills to cut tomatoes into wedges, slice cucumber and red capsicum, chop lettuce, and slice avocado.

  9. the outcome. • This healthy version of chicken nuggets allowed a safer way for the student to be involved in cooking the chicken. The student observed how to turn the oven on and the use of an oven mitt to handle a hot oven tray. The student was able to turn the knob of the electric oven. A decision about safety had been made in class that no year 1 student would handle a hot oven tray as it would be too hot for them even with an oven mitt. This was a good decision.

  10. R3 Reflection on contemporary issues related to child development. • The contemporary issue is obesity in children. • Why is this a problem? How big a problem is it in Australia? What makes kids overweight or obese? • Is it important to know how to feed children to satisfy their nutritional requirements? Why? • What can parents to to get help with this stuff?

  11. Formulate conclusions and recommend possible improvements This activity could be improved by preparing more activities for the student to engage in while waiting for the food to cook. The opportunity to work with a year 1 student in the kitchen area in safe manner and show safe food handling practices was successful. The healthy balanced meal used the oven to decrease the fat content and was served with salad and pita bread. This was graded at an “A” standardbecause it met the following criteria Reflection Reflection on contemporary issues related to child development.
