  2. What is National Board Certification? * Recognition of accomplished teaching* Evaluation by peers of teaching practices* Improved performance and achievement for students Best PD EVER!

NB Core Propositions • Teachers are committed to students and their learning. • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. • Teachers are members of learning communities.

  4. The NBPTS Standards The standards are the backbone of the process! • Become familiar with them BEFORE you begin writing • You MUST consider the standards in your teaching, written description, analysis, and reflection

  5. Eligibility Criteria • Possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university • Complete three years of successful teaching / counseling / working as a media specialist • Hold a valid teaching license

  6. National Board Certification Areas • 25 Areas of Certification • Area suitable for almost every teacher • http://www.boardcertifiedteachers.org/content/25-certificate-areas

  7. Changes for 2014-2015 • New Certification Process will be phased in over three years beginning 2014-2015 • Candidates beginning the process in 2014-2015 will not complete the process and receive Certification until 2017. • Certification Process will have 4 components.

  8. New Certification Process • Component 1: Content Knowledge • Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction • Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment • Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner

  9. Timeline • 2014-2015: Components 1 & 2 • 2015-2016: Component 3 • 2016-2017: Component 4 • November or December 2017: Receive notice of whether or not certification is achieved

  10. Exceptions • CTE: Components 1 & 2 will not be available until 2015-2016 due to standards revision. • Music: Component 1 will not be available until 2015-2016. • World Languages: Component 1 will not be available until 2016-2017.

  11. Component 1: Content Knowledge • Computer-based testing environment • Full range of certification area • Content knowledge and pedagogical practices • Field tests in 2014 and 2015

  12. Component 1: Content Knowledge • Constructed Response • 3 exercises • 30 minutes each • Selected Response • 45 items (SRIs) • 60 minutes to complete this section

  13. Component 2:Differentiation in Instruction • Classroom-based portfolio entry • Samples of student work demonstrating student growth over time • Written commentary analyzing your instructional choices • No field tests

  14. Component 3: Teaching Practice & Learning Environment • Currently under development • Classroom-based portfolio entry • Field tests in late spring 2015

  15. Component 3: Teaching Practice & Learning Environment • Video recording of interactions between you & your students • Written commentary describing, analyzing, and reflecting on your teaching and interactions with students • Focus on student engagement and impact on student learning

  16. Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner • Currently under development • Portfolio entry • Requires evidence of your impact as an educator on students, peers, and community • Field tests in late spring 2016

In Order for NC to Loan You the Money … • You must be paid from state funds. • Complete 3 years of teaching in NC Public Schools • Hold a clear, continuing NC teaching license • For more information, visit: http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/docs/nationalboardcertification/application/eligibility.pdf

Must Do’s • When applying on NB website, check "yes" to providing information to third-parties so NB can notify North Carolina & CMS of candidacy. (Necessary for loan application, salary increase, and renewal credit processing.)  • Candidates also need to indicate Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as school district to facilitate processing of salary increase and renewal credit.

Support From the State Includes … • Professional leave:Up to three days paid (for state-funded candidates) • Full renewal credits:Completion of all the components (if you certify or not – CEUs are applied to transcript in the year you receive your final scores for all components) • Salary Differential:12% of your base pay

  20. CMS Support Program • Small-group meetings facilitated by National Board Certified Teachers • Professional Readers • Instructional Institutes (held during school hours in Winter and Spring)

  21. Retake Format First-year candidates in 2013-2014 or 2012-2013 may retake entries using the same instructions under which they began the process.

Can I / Will I … • Be self-motivated and self-directed? • View myself as a teacher with high standards? • Reflect on my teaching practices in writing? • Articulate the rationale behind my teaching practices? • Not take on additional responsibilities which will take time away from the NB process? • Say that my family and friends will be supportive? • Enlist my school’s administration to support me? • Have easy access to a computer?

  23. If You’re Ready, Your Next Steps… • Visit the National Board website for candidate information • Read the 2014 Guide to NB Certification • Study the 5 Core Propositions • Study the NBPTS Standards for your certification area

  24. If You’re Ready, Your Next Steps… • Review the NB section on the DPI website • Download the materials for your certification area this fall and review • Apply online by December 31st • Pay the $75.00 Annual Processing Fee

  25. If You’re Ready, Your Next Steps… • Review the instructions for the old student work entry. This will be the basis for Component 2. • Review the old Assessment Center exercises. These will be the basis for the constructed response portion of Component 1. • The link to this information is on our wiki.
