  4. So You Think You Can Multi-Task? Think IT Leadership Meeting Silvia Hinton – IT Director August 3, 2012 A discussion with Think IT

  5. Wikipedia Definition • Human multitasking is the best performance by an individual of appearing to handle more than one task at the same time. The term is derived from computer multitasking. An example of multitasking is taking phone calls while typing an email. Some believe that multitasking can result in time wasted due to human context switching and apparently causing more errors due to insufficient attention.

  6. A Few Simple Facts • Workers distracted by email and phone calls suffer as much as a 10% fall in IQ. More than twice that found in marijuana smokers. • Multi Tasking leads to as much as a 40% drop in productivity and increased stress • Humans can shift focus from one thing to the next with astonishing speed. We cannot do two things simultaneously • [People who multitask] are not being more productive—they do feel more emotional satisfaction from their work

  7. Discussion Points • How is your leadership impacted by Multi Tasking? • What is the impact of Multi Tasking on your team? • What Drives you to Multi Task? • Multi Media • Deadlines • Peer Pressure • What else? • How does it effect your daily life?

  8. Tips to Increase Productivity • Establish Goals • Plan your day – do the most important tasks first • Block out time for intense, complex tasks • Eliminate unnecessary tasks • Use wait time Efficiently – Carry a notebook or cards to jot down ideas • “Turn off” Distractions • Get up and move around periodically
