    6. Read to Self Read to Self occurs after all seat work is complete. It is a time for students to practice their reading skills. They read by themselves or with a parent helper anywhere in the room. This is NOT social time. This is a great time for classroom volunteers to take turns sitting with one student and have him or her practice reading some of the Read Well books in their book box.

    7. 3 Ways to Read a Book Read the pictures. Read the words and letters. Retell the story.

    8. Write to Self Write to Self occurs after all seat work is complete. It is a time for students to practice their writing skills based on knowledge of letters and sounds. They write by themselves in their notebooks at their tables. This is NOT an opportunity to draw pictures. A picture must be accompanied by some form of writing. This is a great time for classroom volunteers to take turns sitting with one student and scribe what the students had written. To scribe is to write down what the student says he or she wrote versus what is actually on the paper.

    9. Early Writing Writing in Kindergarten comes in various forms. Do not be surprised if your student starts out with any of the following: Scribbles Random shapes, numbers, or letters. Several letters linked together. Simple words unrelated to the picture either from words already known or being copied from somewhere in the room. Words with only beginning or ending sounds.

    10. White Boards This is a form of Write to Self. Students can get dry erase markers and white boards and write words or sounds. Students can copy Read Well words or make simple sentences. This is NOT social time nor is it a time to draw only pictures.

    11. Kindergarten Reading Goals Know and identify all 26 capital and lower case letters. Know and identify all 26 letter sounds. Read common Read Well sight words and pattern words.

Kindergarten Growing with Mathematics One teacher directed, small group activity for each week of lessons Two to three independent small group activities using math center direction cards *Allows teacher to have small group discussions while children are in centers. One whole group lesson on Problem Solving

    15. Science Sink and Float District created curriculum teaching hands-on exploration and scientific process. Comparing and Measuring National Science Research Council created unit focusing heavily on mathematics and scientific journaling.

    16. Writing Introduction of 4 Square Writing which precedes Step Up to Writing. Modeled and guided journaling. Whole group math journaling. Scientific journaling. Write to Self. White boards.

    17. Writing Goals Write first and last name using proper capital and lower case letters. Write simple words using phonetic spelling including beginning and ending sounds. Start sentences with a capital letter. Leave spaces between words. End sentences with punctuation.

    19. Book It Reading logs are sent home at the beginning of every month. Please write down the titles of the books you read with your child. Students will be rewarded each month for reading and recording 15 or more times. Remember, reading to your child nightly for 10-15 minutes will greatly improve your childs reading skills.

    20. Folders Folders are sent home daily and should return daily. Homework will be sent home Mon-Thurs and should be returned the next day. A homework calendar will be placed in the folder every month. Please keep it in the Do and Return side of the folder. Please clean out Stay at Home side daily. The folder (and email) are great ways to communicate with us.

    21. Behavior Chart Students will be sent home with a chart each night in their folder. Please make sure that your student has his or her name written on it. Please keep the chart in your childs folder. Each day a balloon will be colored either green, yellow, or red. Teachers will try to communicate the reasons if a student has a red balloon.
