  2. Life is Changing • Significant GAU changes in re-openers • Major overhaul of UFF contract • pending ratification

  3. Today’s 15 minutes • Not going to use all 15 as I suspect lots of questions already pent up • Some key changes in both GA union contract and UFF union contract. • Some general advice

  4. Life in an Unionized Campus • 50 years in higher education; almost 40 in FL • “in-unit” vs. “out-of unit” • We all have to deal with it (GAU) • We all are affected by it • Represented by vs. member of

  5. GAU changes • Minimum raised to 11k • 4.4% raise october 1 • Gator care • FMLA “lite” • Full negotiations next summer • Need input on ideas for next summer • We will be seeking out ideas

  6. Faculty Union Changes • Tentative agreement; not valid until ratified • Ratification vote this week (UFF and UFBOT) • Training sessions scheduled throughout fall • Associate deans • Chairs • HR • Other • If you don’t get invite, invite yourself

  7. Faculty changes • 5% raises • Combined tenure and promotion articles • Simplified contract • Merged sabbaticals and FEOs • Does not affect out of unit faculty • Summer changes

  9. Read • The regulations (out-of-unit) • The faculty contract (in-unit) • The GAU contract

Listen • Most of all, listen to your faculty • They may be asking the wrong question • Find out what they really want • talk with them; you are their best advocate • You may need to re-direct them….if they are not performing appropriately, guide/mentor. • There is another session on evaluations, but need not wait until evaluation to express concerns.

  11. Ask • Your associate dean • Us • HR • Contracts and rules can be complex, even to those of us working them every day. • We are in constant contact with HR and with associate deans; deans so your question can get routed correctly and quickly.

  12. Chair as manager • Old joke is that managing faculty is like herding cats. • Slightly different managerial role for chairs (engineering vs education vs out of unit) • Same principles apply • Work with • cajole • Very little of “ordering”
