  2. “The mission of the Michigan Department of State's traffic safety program is to promote public awareness of traffic safety issues, increase safety among the state's motorists and pedestrians, and develop and implement traffic safety programs to educate, license, and regulate drivers on behalf of the Secretary of State” Traffic Safety Mission

  3. How the SHSP and action team plans shape activities and funding decisions • MDOS staff participation with GTSAC and action teams • SHSP and action plans are reviewed and shared with Internal Traffic Safety Group • Development of traffic safety mission and agenda • Direction from Secretary Land and Chief Operating Officer

  4. Senior Mobility Action Plan • Improve the process of identification, evaluation and intervention of drivers with dementia, or other aging related functional limitations • Develop guidelines for physicians and other health care providers for identifying and evaluating driving impairments • Develop and disseminate educational materials to assist the legal community (law enforcement officers, attorneys, judges) in identifying driving impairments and referring impaired individuals to the proper resources • Support efforts to develop effective screening tools

  5. MDOS Short-term Agenda • Review and recommend changes to Physical and Mental Standards for Drivers and Visual Standards for Motor Vehicle Drivers’ Licenses • Review and recommend changes to Departmental forms • Assessment tools

  6. SHSP, Drivers Age 24 and Younger • Enhance effective existing safety programs such as graduated licensing and driver education • Increase the monitoring of new and existing high school driver education programs and private driver training school programs • Standardize the driver education curriculum required for both the classroom and behind the wheel driver education • Upgrade the driver education teacher preparation and continuing education programs

  7. MDOS Short-term Agenda DEPIA • Standardization of driver education curriculum • Standardization of driver education teacher preparation • New Segment 1 and Segment 2 tests • Professional development requirements

  8. SHSP, Motorcycle Safety • Expand the availability of motorcycle rider and safety education courses through public and private sponsors and increase public awareness • Implement the motorcycle safety assessment program • Decrease the number of unendorsed motorcyclists

  9. MDOS Short-term Agenda • Schedule and publicize Mobile Branch Office at motorcycle events • Public awareness campaign • Continue to expand statewide motorcycle training availability (up from 19 to 30 sponsors) • Statewide professional development • Motorcycle Advisory Committee recommendations submitted to Secretary Land
