The Maranao people (Maranao: ['mәranaw]; Filipino: Maranaw), also spelled Meranao, Maranaw, and Mëranaw, is the term used by the Philippine government to refer to the southern indigenous people who are the "people of the lake", a predominantly-Muslim Lanao province region of the Philippine island of Mindanao.

  3. Maranao houses are usually built along river, road, or lakeshore following a line pattern. An old maranao house is a big room like a hall or a gallery because it has no partitions or dividers. It is elevated from 0.31 to 2.21 meters above the ground. It has 9 to 12 posts, depending on the size of the house.

  4. The main area is about 7.86 to 18.9 meters wide. Roof, walls, floorings, doors and windows are made of bamboo and rattan materials. Most of the houses have no ceiling. The porch is enclosed to prevent children from falling. The kitchen is built half a meter lower and is located at the back.

  6. A torogan is a symbol of social status. This is the royal home of Sultan/ Datus or the upper-class maranaos in the community. The maranao design called okir is carved in the torogan houses in the panolong( a carved beam ornamented with okir motif that extend beyond the house.

  7. SHAPE- it has two dimensions, length and width. This is an enclosed area defined by color, space, value, texture and form. When lines meet, they form shapes. ELEMENTS OF ART

  8. 2. FORM- it has three dimensions: length, width and height. Example of forms are cubes, pyramids, spheres, and cylinders. Form has depth as well as height. Good examples of forms are sculptures and decorative arts.

  9. 3. RHYTHM- is also shown in the okir, which refers to the repetition of folk motifs, of plants and geometric forms that are typically well-known in Maranao artwork.

  10. A mural is a painting which is done directly on the wall. Murals usually express or show the concerns, hopes, values, memories of the community where they are painted. Today, murals can be removable. They can be painted on panels can be attached to a wall and can be removed when desired.
