  1. Writing Word Equations • A word equation is a short way of writing a chemical reaction.

  2. Reactants:(starting substances) are written on the left hand side • Products:(end products) are written on the right hand side. • →: an arrow is used to separate the reactants and products

  3. Example: • Lithium oxide, a solid, decomposes into solid lithium and oxygen gas. • The corresponding word equation can be written as: lithium oxide(s)lithium(s) + oxygen(g)

  4. The state of the reactants and products is shown by subscripts. These symbols are: (s) - solid (l)- liquid (g) - gas (aq) - aqueous (dissolved in water)
