#9 The 3 Kingdoms of Egypt
1.Egypt’s Old Kingdom (2600 BC - 2300 BC) • Pharaohs were considered the Son of the God Re • His word was law and was obeyed without question
Religion • Polytheistic • Believed in an Afterlife • Believed Pharaohs continued caring for Egypt after death so they were embalmed • Learned a lot about the human body • The embalmed body was known as a mummy and buried in Pyramids…
Pyramids • Built to protect the Pharaohs, hold supplies for the Spirit World • Learned about fractions, division, geometry and masonry • Pyramids were only built during the Old Kingdom • Did not protect the Pharaoh (still easily robbed) • Expensive
2. Middle Kingdom (2050 BC – 1670 BC) • Began after 200 years of civil war that ended the Old Kingdom • An age of peace, prosperity and achievement • Valley of the Kings • Tombs built into the rock • Replaced Pyramids as burial-place of Pharaohs
3. New Kingdom(1550 BC – 1080 BC) • Egypt reached the height of its power • King Tut • Hatshepsut– 1stfemale Pharaoh • Ramses II - ruled for 66 years • Built many palaces using slave labor from Judea and other conquered lands • Decline and Fall • Invasions from stronger armies with iron weapons • Egypt lacked iron ore = could not produce weapons
