NOTES ABOUT 5TH GRADE • Helping your child prepare for the next step- MIDDLE SCHOOL by implementing NEW Common Core Standards • They are the example for the younger grades (no one to blame wrong-doings on) • However, your child is still 10 or 11 years old and will still need prompting to complete homework, study for exams, and complete larger projects. They may also require realistic consequences.

  5. PARENT’S ROLE *Support your child daily -Check their work -Help keep them organized -Ask what they did at school *Allow your child to do the work *Keep me posted about any concerns you have about your child

  6. EXPECTATIONS *Be respectful! *Use common sense 

BEHAVIOR *Students are expected to follow expectations *Inappropriate behavior or disrespect = Behavior Reflection Chat with Mrs. Caudle or Ms. G./ loss of recess or lunch Parent contact or meeting Citation issued sent to the office / see Mrs. Scroggins *Appropriate Behavior = tickets student choice activity reward time   prizes coupons

CURRICULUM: ELA • Fluent, accurate, and expressive reading • Reading Comprehension of both Expository and Narrative Text • Multiple-paragraph Narrative and Expository Compositions, including Research that includes Citations, and Bibliography. • Sentence Structure, Grammar, Punctuation, and Conventions. • Listening and Speaking

CURRICULUM: MATH • Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide Whole Numbers, Fractions, and Decimals • Double-digit multiplication and division • ***If your child does not have strength with their multiplication facts, please continue to practice with him/her now. • Algebra and Functions • Solve for X and Interpret (X,Y) Graphs • Measurement and Geometry • Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability • Problem Solving including Word Problems • Challenge Math Grouping as appropriate

  10. CURRICULUM: SCIENCE • Space Systems- The Stars and Solar System • Earth’s Systems- Atmosphere, Ecosystems, Biosphere, etc. • Structure and Properties of Matter • Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems • Students will be tested on both 4th and 5th grade standards in May!

CURRICULUM: SOCIAL STUDIES • Early Explores • Native Americans • The Colonial Era • Causes of the Revolution • The American Revolution • The U.S. Constitution • 1789-mid 1800’s-Western Movement • 50 States and Capitals- Focusing more on WHERE the states are located, with an understanding to describe characteristics of the states

  12. WORK EXPECTATIONS • Higher Expectations for Work and Behavior • Best work • Neat and organized • Math calculations shown • Full Sentences • Directions are clearly followed

HOMEWORK *Homework = responsibilities *Homework should not mean stress *Homework is graded as check plus, check, or minus Standard homework assignments: • Reading DAILY • Writing about their reading • Math-DAILY • Science and Social Studies- usually given when class work is not completed during class *Finishing class work or correcting any other work

  14. STUDENT HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES • Record Homework in planner daily • Gather needed materials from school • Math book, math journal, reading journal • Complete homework-neatly • Call a Homework Buddy as needed • Return homework and textbooks daily

  15. PARENT HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES • Establish regular homework time and location • Dublin Library has homework help • Check work for neatness, spot check for accuracy, and initial nightly • Have mini book talks (question sheet attached) • Praise your child • Limit screen time

GRADING • Rubric Grade System • “3” 80-100% • “2” 70-79% • “1” Less than 70% • “4” Consistently Above Grade Level • Goal-Every Student a “3”, in all areas • Progress Reports- Three Times a Year • October, January, and April • Report Cards • October, February, June • STAR Testing: Beginning of May • Please plan vacations accordingly

BAND • Outstanding for Developing a Love and Appreciation of Music • Builds Mathematical and Logic Skills • Offer Opportunities for Travel and Friendships (Last years schedule) • Afterschool Program *with flexibility • Mondays: Woodwinds-flutes, sax, and clarinets • Tuesdays: Brass and Percussion

  20. VOLUNTEERING *Fill out the volunteer form and submit to the office to be cleared. *Let me know your availability and how you would like to help. (I have this information from most of you already) *Special talents or knowledge to share?

  21. CELEBRATING! *Preferred: Pencils, books, activities *Healthy food options are HIGHLY encouraged *Must run it by me first (a week in advance)

  22. SCHEDULE: Fine Arts: Thursdays 8:30am – 9:15am P.E.: Fridays 8:30am – 9:15am Gameday: Fridays 2:00pm – 2:45pm Library: Tuesdays 9:00am – 9:30am

  23. Classroom Supplies Parents ask “What can I get for your classroom?” WE ALWAYS NEED: • Spiral notebooks • Composition books • Pencils • Pencil sharpeners • Erasers • Glue sticks • **If you find a good deal, let me know! Those $0.05 sales are very helpful!

  24. FROM THE OFFICE Safety First Morning arrival time - no earlier than 8:10 Wear a visitor's pass when you come on campus. Pick up after school:  do not get out of your car in white zones or parking in red zones.  Remember to drive slowly through our parking lot.
