Agenda

What is information design? What is an information designer?

Graphics principles

Graphical excellence

Information design by the National Geographic

Lie factor

Data density

Criticize a manual

Design a graphic with pencil and paper

Example: Computer Usage among Dentists (What is good? What is bad?)

Information Design is …

... the communication of complex information through clear language and design.

Information Design Unit: http://www.idu.co.uk/

... a theoretical structure by which information is organized and presented. The separation of document design into information and graphic design ...

Mike Fletcher, University of Waterloo

... applying the principles of design to the selection, organization, and presentation of information. From paragraphs to pie charts and CD-ROMs to Websites, it is a means of building effective information products.

Ken Dow, Maricopa Information Design

... based on a process view of intentional transformation of data-elements into information ... in order to obtain an understandable representation.

Peter Bogaards, TS Design, Amsterdam, now of Razorfish

An information designer is ...

… the individual who organizes the patterns inherent in data, making the complex clear

… a person who creates the structure or map of information which allows others to find their personal path to knowledge

… the emerging 21st century professional occupation addressing the needs of the age focused upon clarity, human understanding, and the science of the organization of information

Richard Saul Wurman

Graphics

instruments for reasoning about quantitative information

graphical integrity

graphical competence demands 3 skills: substantive, statistical, artistic

Design is choice.

Principles I

small, noncomparative, highly labeled data sets  tables

time-series: descriptive chronology is not causal explanation

visual representation of the data consistent with numerical representation

show data variations, not design variations

The only way to think clearly about money over time is to make comparisons using inflation-adjusted units of money.

The number of information-carrying (variable) dimensions depicted should not exceed the number of dimensions in the data.

Principles II

clear, detailed, thorough labeling  defeat graphical distortion and ambiguity

Above all else show the data (data ink).

Forgo chartjunk (vibrations, grids, ducks)

Range frame should replace non-data-bearing frame.

The same ink should often serve more than one graphical purpose.

Because they do have a natural visual hierarchy, varying shades of gray show varying quantities better than color.

Organize and order the flow of graphical information presented to the eye.

Graphical Excellence

is well-designed presentation of interesting data.

consist of complex ideas communicated with clarity, precision, efficiency.

gives to the viewer the greatest number of ideas in the shortest time with the least ink in the smallest space.

is nearly always multivariate.

requires telling the truth about the data.

Graphical elegance is often found in simplicity of design and complexity of data.

In-class assignment #1

Criticize a manual

Ortlieb Handlebar Bag “Ultimate 2” (February 2000)

What is good about this manual?

What would you improve?

Which design problems do you recognize?

Information design instructor heiko spallek dmd phd text tufte er the visual display of quantitative information

In-class assignment #2

Design a graphic

Follow the principles learned.

Explain the reasoning for your design choices.

What should be improved?
