  2. 3rd Degree MCL Sprain • Complete rupture • Because of the force involved, other structures could also be injured, such as the meniscus or the ACL.

  3. Mechanism of Injury • Direct blow to the lateral side of the knee while the foot is planted • A valgus force to the knee with the foot in excessive external rotation

  4. Signs & Symptoms • Pt tender • Significant edema • Pn • Laxity w/ no endpoint

  5. Modalities • Ultrasound • Ice • Cryo-cuff

  6. Case Study Male Ice Hockey Position: Goalie Injury: 3rd Degree MCL Sprain Pt. received a direct blow to the lateral side of the knee during play. c/o pt tenderness & pn (+) Valgus Stress Test
