  1. Habits to Avoid To Have a Healthy Smile

  2. Healthy Smile • A healthy smile requires a lot more than regular brushing and flossing. • You might not be aware of it, but you may have habits that can harm your teeth and gums.  • They may seem second nature, and you don’t see the immediate effects, but you never know when dental emergencies can arise and it can take a while for tooth damage to become visible.

  3. Take note of these Habits that are Best Avoided to Keep Your Smile Healthy:

  4. Nail Biting • Biting on nails can cause your teeth to chip or crack. • It can also lead to jaw problems as the jaw is placed in an unusual position for a long time. • Not only that, harmful bacteria in nails can be transferred to the mouth.

  5. Chewing On Ice • Ice doesn’t leave food residue because it’s only water. But it can damage the teeth. • Biting down on ice can lead to fractured teeth. • It can also cause increased sensitivity as the tooth nerves become exposed.

  6. Using Teeth As A Tool • Teeth shouldn’t be used as a substitute for tools. • Using the teeth to open packages and bottles can cause chips and fractures. • One wrong move and the lips and inner cheeks can also sustain injuries.

  7. Consistent Snacking • You may be thinking that eating shouldn’t be bad. Right? But grazing throughout the day can cause plaque to build up on teeth fast. • Without good dental hygiene habits, this can lead to tartar accumulation too. Instead of snacking consistently, try to indulge in snacks or sweets during meals. • This way, saliva can help dislodge food deposits and keep them from lingering in the mouth.

  8. Aggressive Brushing • Brushing harshly doesn’t equate to effective brushing. You can remove as many deposits in your mouth by brushing with gentle hands. • Aggressive brushing, especially right after eating, can cause the enamel to wear faster. • Wait for at least 30 minutes before brushing, and gently move your brush from one area to another.

  9. It’s best to stay on the safe side and start doing away from these habits, even if you've been doing them for years and don’t notice any irregularities in your mouth.  • Dental emergencies are inconvenient and can be costly too. • It’s always easier to reach for proper tools than deal with a severe toothache or mouth pain.
