  2. Goal of O and A • The ideal training room facility should be well designed and maximize use • An ATR is a multipurpose area used for first aid, therapy and exercise rehab, injury prevention, medical procedures such as physical exams and AT administration.

  3. Organizing and Administering an Athletic Program • Square Footage • Less than 1000 square feet = impractical • 1000 – 2000 square feet = satisfactory • 1200 square feet = recommended

  4. Distinct Areas • Taping Bandaging • Injury treatment using rehabilitative equipment and/or therapeutic modalities • A wet area for whirlpools, refrigerator and an ice machine • Storage areas are essential for supplies and equipment

  5. Establishing Rules of Operation for an Athletic Training Program • Every AT Program must develop policies and procedures that carefully delineate the daily routine of the program. • Organizes athletes and coaches alike

  6. Providing Coverage • High Schools with limited available supervision may only be able to provide athletic training facility coverage on as needed or an as approved basis. • Examples: • 30hrs/wk • 20hrs/wk • High Risk to Low Risk • Varsity to JV • Contracted through an area Clinic

  7. Athletic Training Room Policies • The ATR should only be used for prevention and care of sports injuries. • It is not a “Hang Out” • It is not a “Meeting Room” for sports

  8. Examples • No Cleats are allowed. • Game Equipment is kept outside. • Shoes must be kept off treatment tables. • Horse Play and profanity are not be allowed.

  9. Keeping the Facilities Clean • Good hygiene and sanitation are essential. • Prevention of Disease Infection • Management of Blood Borne Pathogens • Example: • Tables are disinfected daily • Counters are disinfected daily • Trash is removed daily

  10. Establishing Rules for the Athlete • The ATC and SAT should encourage good health habits. • Things to consider; • PPE • Is the athlete insured? • Does the athlete shower after practice? • Does the athlete exchange gym uniforms or gym clothes?

  11. Emergency Plans • The installation of an emergency plan is imperative. • The plan may change due to location of the emergency. • Emergency phone numbers should be given out at the beginning of each season.

  12. Record Keeping • Keeping adequate up to date records is of major importance in the athletic training program • PPE • Injury Reports and Progress Notes • Clearance Notes • Treatment Log • Inventory Sheets • Annual Reports • Time Sheets

  13. Developing a Budget • A major problem often facing ATCs is a budget of sufficient size. • Fixed vs. Non fixed • Supplies • Expandable vs. Inexpandable • Other costs • CEUs • Postage • Liability Insurance • Membership Dues • Professional Journals

Summary • O and A of an ATR demands significant time and effort. • An AT program cab certainly be enhanced by designing or renovating a facility to maximize the potential use of the space available. • An AT program best serves the athlete by establishing specific policies andrefulations governing the use of available services. • Budgets should allow for the purchase equipment and essential supplies to provide care for the athletes.
