  2. Hidden Sentence Training

  3. What is Hidden Sentence Training? • The training was developed by Action for Prisoners Families • It is aimed at all services who come into contact with families. The Training aims to give participants the opportunity to: • Explore the impact of imprisonment on prisoners’ families • Explore the current prison system • Discuss the support needs of prisoners’ families • Evaluate the use and importance of knowledge about the needs and wishes of prisoners’ families • Discuss how to improve the coordination of services to provide more effective support for those affected by the imprisonment of a family member • Reflect on how to improve practice in supporting prisoners’ families.

  4. Where does it fit in the Integrated Family Support Project? • Spreading the word to a larger audience • Awareness raising • Improving support offered • Increasing understanding • Challenging for change

Where have we delivered? • In the first year we delivered to 453 individuals across the 12 Local Authorities in the North East Region. • We have delivered in partnership with both Durham Tees Valley and Northumbria Probation Trusts. • We have delivered through LCSB’s in Middlesbrough, North Tyneside, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead and Stockton on Tees.

  6. How has it been received? • Evaluations have been very positive • Some issues due to the wording of the outcomes • Very enjoyable training to deliver because of the positivity of participants

What have we learnt? • One of the first things to surprise us was the assumption that services were already in place. • Lack of knowledge of prison based organisations. • Smooth processes are challenged by lack of regional co-ordination of services. • Contact with families was happening as crisis interventions rather than planned support. • Services were not asking questions about family members in custody

  8. What have you learnt from us? • Organisations who offer support to the children and families of offenders • Resources available to support practice • The complexity of issues families face • The need for multi agency working • The need for family involvement in the offender journey • How well CAF can support the identification of needs
