  1. Warm-up November 1, 2013what is this? And…what does it do???

  2. The Digestive System Chapter 24, page

  3. What does it consist of? The digestive tract includes the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and salivary glands add materials to the digestive tract to help break down food.

  4. Vocabulary  • Mechanical digestion- the process of breaking down food by mashing or crushing • Chemical digestion-using enzymes to break food down • Pancreas-organ between stomach and small intestine that makes fluid for small intestine (sodium bicarbonate, enzymes, hormones) • Liver-redish/brown organ found on right side under ribs (makes bile, stores nutrients, breaks down toxins) • gallbladder—saclike organ storing bile (to help breakdown fat)

  5. Process of digestion • Mechanical digestion in mouth (saliva) • Tongue pushes food to pharynx • Muscle contractions (peristalsis) squeezes food in esophagus to stomach • In stomach, enzymes are used to kill bacteria and break food down into nutrients (both mechanical and chemical digestion) making chyme • Chyme enters the small intestine (where nutrients are absorbed) • Pancreas, liver, gallbladder add enzymes to finish digestion • Large intestine absorbs water and gets rid of waste

  6. Questions in-class • How does the digestive system work with the circulatory (cardiovascular) system? • What organs in the digestive system are not part of the digestive tract? • What is the function of saliva? • Name three places in the digestive tract where chemical digestion takes place. • How does the structure of the small intestine help it absorb nutrients?

  7. notecards • Use one notecard to write a vocabulary word on the front and one on the back • Tape it to the person’s back that you are sitting next to • Go around the room and ask questions about your word (Such as: is it part of the _______system?) • The person you are asking can only answer yes or no • Try to guess which word you have

  8. What you need for Adventure Page 1:Title Page (your name, my name (the class), title and picture of your food) Page 2: Typed story consisting of the following words: teeth, mouth, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, stomach, pharynx, esophagus, rectum, anus, hydrochloric acid, enzymes, chemical digestion, mechanical digestion Page 3: A picture at the end showing your food (with arrows) going down through the digestive system.
