Phrase & its Structure What is Phrase: In linguistic analysis, a phrase is a group of words (or possibly a single word) that functions as a constituent in the syntax of a sentence, a single unit within a grammatical hierarchy. What is Phrase Structure: The arrangement of the constituents of a sentence is called the phrase structure. There are five commonly occurring types of phrase. They are: Noun Phrase (NP); Adjective Phrase (AdjP); Verb Phrase (VP); Adverb Phrase (AdvP); Preposition Phrase (PP). Prepared by: Nageen Abdul Waheed - 19011502-002

  3. SYNTACTIC CATEGORY • Syntactic category is a set of words and/or phrases in a language which share a significant number of common characteristics. Syntactic categories commonly include: • 1. Parts of Speech: (Determiner, Adjective, Noun, Pronoun, Preposition, Adverb, Auxiliary, Verb), etc; • 2. Phrase Structure Grammars: (Noun Phrase, Adjective Phrase, Verb Phrase, Adverb Phrase, Preposition Phrase); and • 3. Sentence, as the core of the structure. • The syntactic categories are illustrated in a tree diagram, called phrase structure tree, by supplying the name of the syntactic category of each word grouping. Phrase Structure • A Sentence has two main phrases Noun Phrase NP - Before the Verb Verbal Phrase VP - From the Verb to end • In a Noun Phrase – Noun is Significant, all other constituents are optional i.e (Art) (Adj) (P) • In a Verbal Phrase – Verb is Significant, all other constituents are optional i.e (Aux) (P) (NP) (Adv) Prepared by: Nageen Abdul Waheed - 19011502-002
