  3. Presidential Diplomacy

  4. Definition • Diplomacy: the complex and often challenging practice of fostering relationships around the world in order to resolve issues and advance interests

  5. Big-Stick Diplomacy • President: Theodore Roosevelt • Definition: “Speak softly and carry a big stick” • –International negotiations based on the threat of force • Example: Roosevelt Corollary: addition to the Monroe Doctrine that states the US will now use FORCE in Latin America to protect its economic interests Benefits: Demonstrates US power without having to really use it (bully) Drawbacks: Expensive, and you could have to use force (war) http://www.history.com/topics/us-presidents/theodore-roosevelt/videos/roosevelts-big-stick-foreign-policy

  6. Dollar Diplomacy • President: William Howard Taft • Definition: Using economic power and business investment to influence governments, events, and policies • Examples: • US agrees to help Nicaragua pay its national debt in exchange for the US having military power there • Taft also paid off Honduras’ debt to Great Britain to maintain peace • Benefits: Uses American businesses and investments (banking/loans)- grows our economy and created allies • Drawbacks: Costly, often motivated to send troops to protect investments

  7. Moral Diplomacy • President: Woodrow Wilson • Definition: It was our moral responsibility to deny recognition to any government it viewed as oppressive, undemocratic, or hostile to US interests • Example: The Mexican Revolution • The Mexican people overthrew a dictator we supported, then his replacement was also murdered, and so we refused to recognize their “government of butchers” • Promoted democracy throughout the world • Benefits: set a good tone for the US in the world • Drawbacks: built off the idea of American Exceptionalism, gave Wilson a “preacher” reputation
