BASIC FACTS • President: Pranab Mukherjee elected in 2012 • Prime minister: Manmohan Singh elected in 2004 (he has the real power the president is like our VP) • Population: 1.2 billion with a growth rate of 1.3% annually. They have a birth rate of 20 per 1000 with an infant mortality rate of 46 per 1000 born. Life expectancy is 67 • Capital: New Delhi with a population of 21 million. Other large cities: Mumbai 20 million, Kolkata 15 million, Chennai 7 million, & Bangalore 7 million

  3. Basic facts • Monetary unit: rupee • Languages: Hindi 41% even though English is the official language & is used by all govt operation & businesses • Ethnicity/race: Indo-Aryan: 72% & Dravidian 25% • Religion: 80% Hindu & 13% Muslim • Literacy: 61%

  6. geography • 1/3 the size of the US • Borders china, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, & Bangladesh • 3 regions: Himalayan in the north, Gangetic plain, & the plateau region in the south & central part • 3 major rivers: Ganges, Indus, & Brahmaputra

  7. history • Da Gama landed in 1498 & the Portuguese dominated it for the next 100 yrs. • GB set up East India company in 1612 & the company ruled until the British govt took over in 1857-58 after the Sepoy rebellion • Sent 6 million troops to fight in WWI for the allies • Ind movement started under Gandhi & the Indian National Congress Party

Gandhi • Leader of the Indian national Congress • Used civil disobedience to further their cause • Arrested and placed in jail in 1942 • Released in 1944 • 1947 India given ind (northern Muslim region demanded their ind & eventually became Pakistan with the help of Jinnah & the Muslim League!!)

  9. History • Nehru was the first PM & under him they est a constitution (eventually his daughter Indira Gandhi took over for him and continued his policies) • 1971: rebellion in E. Pakistan forcing 10 million refugees to flee to India. India invaded & forced the Pakistan army out. Became Bangladesh!!!! • Golden Temple massacre in Amritsar: 1984 Indira sent army into Golden shrine to root out Sikh holy men/gunmen from the holy shrine that they had been using as a base for terrorist raids & attempt to create a Sikh state (followers were outraged over attack & caused more problem with the Sikhs) • Indira assassination in 1984: killed by 2 policemen (members of her bodyguard team who were Sikh’s. son took over and was also assassinated in 1991by Tamil rebels over Sri Lanka ind movement

  10. history • 1998: 5 nuclear test shocking the world (world condemned) & Pakistan did own testing 2 weeks later • Kashmir: disputed territory between Pakistan & India. India controls 2/3 of it (Himalayan region). Only Indian state that is predominately Muslim. Constant violence and fighting since 1999. • 2004 Manmohan Singh became PM (1stsikh PM)

Mumbai terrorist attack • On going fighting between Muslims, Hindu's, & Christians was going on starting in 2008 (most of the attacks were led Islamic militants) • November 26 2008: several landmarks & commercial hubs popular with foreigners including 2 5 star hotels, a train station, & a cinema were targeted (gunmen attacked all and it took 3 days to end the siege) called it India's sept 11 (Pakistan & one its terrorist groups was blamed further straining India/Pakistan relations)

  12. culture • Namaste: traditional greeting where both palms are together at chest level & you bow (HELLO & GOODBYE) • Men DO NOT TOUCH WOMEN!!!!!!! (FORMAL OR INFORMAL) • Western women do not shake hands with Indian men!!!! • Don’t stare at people • No photo’s without permission • Public affection is a no no!!!!!! • The HEAD is sacred & should not be touched by strangers

  13. culture • When dining: always wash your hands before and after • Try to use only your right hand only when at all possible • Do not turn down food even if you dislike: seen as a sign of disrespect • Don’t point but use your chin
