  2. Emerging Careers

  3. Governor Rick Perry said, • “To remain competitive in the 21st century global economy, Texas must create a seamless system of opportunity and innovation, starting when young Texans enter grade school and continuing until they graduate from college, qualified for jobs that will keep our state at the forefront of the global market.” The report warns that “ . . . if the state’s talent development system . . . basic education (K-12), community and technical colleges, universities and workforce development—does not make critical changes at every level to ensure a dependable workforce is available, Texas will not remain a high-quality place for doing business.” Governor’s Competitive Council states: “Over the 12 month period ending in April 2008, Texas added 262,000 jobs–more than half of the total jobs added in the U.S.”

  7. TECH-PREP TEXAS SCHOLAR • Certification and licensure increase the opportunities for students to move successfully between college and the workplace throughout their lives. • Tech Prep RGV’s labor market report identifies targeted occupations (the “best jobs” and emerging occupations in the Valley) and provides detailed information about individual careers, including but not limited to requirements for postsecondary education, licensure, and certification. • Cavazos Tech Prep Scholarship ranking system can provide extra points for students who have earned certification/licensure. This will not only benefit some students, but also impact larger student populations. • http://techpreprgv.com/downloads.shtml

  8. TECH-PREP TEXAS SCHOLAR • Advanced Technical Credit (ATC) courses are articulated at the state level. • Students receive a grade only on high school transcripts for completed courses, but have the opportunity to receive college credit for these courses at local colleges and others in the state. Students who take dual enrollment courses receive grades on both high school and college transcripts at completion of the course. College Tech Prep programs are degree plans that blend multiple types of college-course opportunities available at the high school level, including academic and career technical dual credit courses, articulated courses, and others. • http://techpreprgv.com/downloads.shtml

  9. TECH-PREP TEXAS SCHOLAR • ATC courses are similar to AP courses: grades do not automatically appear on college transcripts at the time courses are completed. Tech Prep RGV provides an online CATEMA system that facilitates tracking of those courses and communication with students about opportunities. • http://techpreprgv.com/downloads.shtml

  10. WHAT A STUDENT MUST DO TO BE A TECH-PREP TEXAS SCHOLAR • 1. Take the courses required by the Recommended High School Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program. • 2. Have at least a four-year plan of study, and preferably a six or eight year plan of study that includes, in high school, two or more career and technology courses for 3 or more credits. • 3. Earn at least two college-level Tech-Prep courses as part of the student’s high school graduation plan. A “college-level Tech Prep course” is an articulated or dual enrollment career and technology course taken in high school. • In an articulated course , the school district and one of our local colleges have agreed that a student can receive college credit as part of a Tech Prep graduation plan. • Career Connections http://mws.mcallenisd.net/cate/index.html
